Looking for a tree for my front garden

  • can't grow too big 6 m from the house
  • able to withstand the most horrible heavy clay soil
  • looks pretty all year round.

What do you recommend oh wise gardening ones

Haha I was just going to say Amelanchier

Yes an Amelanchier is a great choice something of interest for most of the year. It’s officially a shrub so the roots won’t interfere with paths and foundations. It also doesn’t mind pruning to keep it a reasonable size.
We’ve just cut down a eucalyptus that was planted in our front garden about 30 years ago. The roots spread up to 100ft!

Ooh, that's lovely. I've put that on my wish list Smile

I have 5 Amelanchier. They are stunning, but not nice to,look at during the dormant season.

For year round interest go for Acer Sango Kaku. It has stunning leaves which change with every season and then in the dormant season Coral bark. I grow Acers on Clay. I just dig a big hole fill it with Ericaseous compost and top dress with Composted bark each spring. They are slow growing to buy the size you need at the start. They don’t need feeding or pruning.

I dont agree that Amelanchier arent nice to look at when dormant. If you have a tree with a good habit the branches look good minus leaves.
I have various (tree and shrub form) and the one outside my back door looks lovely now, budding up.
Acers are lovely but need shade and shelter and are a very specific style, unlike Amelanchier which look good almost anywhere IMO.

Keep it very well watered. Amelanchier do not like to be dry.
