Please help me find a plant like Philadelphus (Mock Orange) that originates from Asia. I have many oriental plants in my garden and am keen to continue the theme.
Criteria:

  • It needs to grow to 2.5-3 metres high (so above the fence line) as I like privacy from neighbours.
  • Evergreen would be lovely but I suspect I will have to settle for deciduous for more choice. I can't plant a tree due to neighbours extension so need a large shrub.
  • Ideally it will flower during summer
  • Acidic soil
  • NW Facing
  • Biggish/long garden so plenty of sun
I have spent hours internet browsing and am still no closer to finding anything. Any ideas gratefully received!

Use the RHS plant finder engine on their website, paying particular attention to hardiness.

When you have a list of suggestions you may find your aren't able to tick every box on your wish list, but maybe you could use a container or change the soil, and accept flowering outside of summer that may be less than spectacular.

Why does it need to originate from Asia?
The only thing that springs to mind instantly is Eucryphia nymanensis ‘Nymansay’

There are loads of different types of mock orange. Some from Asia but also some from America and Mexico. Just have several different varieties if you particularly like mock oranges.

The only one I can think of with oriental connections is Abelia x grandiflora which is pretty hardy and has a long season of interest with white/pink flowers in summer followed by colourful bracts in autumn.
Choisya ternata comes from South America, but fits the bill otherwise.

They are both shrubby evergreens.
