I let a new honeysuckle ramble over my front door last year and it looked so lovely i didn`t cut it back.I can now see lovely new green shoots which make the old green look dull. Can i just leave it as i have always wanted masses of the stuff over my door and cant bring myself to cut it back ?

The new shoots should cover the old pretty soon, but you could prune out some of the tattier old branches. Lucky you - my last attempt at honeysuckle got horribly mildewed and hardly flowered - am hoping for better luck in my new house. What variety did you plant?

Cheers for that.
Not sure which variety but Woolworths are fab !
Sounds sad but they sell lots of stuff like that and everything i have ever planted from them had done really well.
Planted 3 cherry blossom trees this year for abot a fiver each and they are in full blossom !

ps
2 of my honeysuckles did the same as yours and i cut them right down to ground level last year (i mean literally nothing showing ! )
This year they have both perked up beautifully with no hint of powdery mildew.

I am dreadful- have an ancient honeysuckle outside which I cut back sporadically and seems to survive although probably would do better if I met its needs more regularly!

honeysuckle is tough as old boots - my paddock hedges are full of it where it has to compete with everything and anything.

just let it go, it doesn't need any attention. if it gets too much the best time to hack it back is just after it's flowered so it's got plenty of time to grow new shoots that will have flowers on them next year

Thanks for the tips. I'm off to Woolworths !
