Anyone starting sweet peas now?

I always start them off in spring ( and get few blooms and stumpy plants ). I’ve noticed at the allotment some start them earlier and get good results , so I’m going to try planting some in pots on the windowsill ( I don’t have a greenhouse). Anyone else starting some now? Any tips ? TIA.

In the past I've started them in November and in February and apart from the fact that the November ones bloomed about ten days earlier didn't see any difference at all.

Mind you, last year I didn't get any flowers on mine which really upset me as they are my favourites

I am due to start some today, as it is a biodynamic flower day. Only a few, for outside the back door.

Thats really interesting. I'm soaking some seeds now and will plant tomorrow. is that OK from a biodynamic P.O.V. ? I'm also interested in biodynamic, ,and in the past have tried it, but I have not mastered it.

I’ve done this the last few years and they’ve done well.
I think I’ll start mine tomorrow!

just a question- how long do they take to germinate at this time of year? Planted a week ago, no hint of germination yet.

What does the biodynamic element mean? Please explain!

Rosewatersoap · 10/01/2018 09:14

I'm a complete novice, do you plant the seeds straight in the ground or in small pots first? Brew

Soak them for a day in water. Then plant in a pot. Mine seem to be starting to germinate after 10 days.
Biodynamic is a philosophy of gardening/ agriculture which works with the phases of the planets. Some days are good for root veg, others for leaf veg, others for fruit etc.

I have tried and failed so many times with sweet peas!

ClimbingCatBells · 15/01/2018 09:32

I have bought some to start indoors.Got some sunflowers too.I usually sew them outdoors later on but wanted to start gardening now.
I am really looking forwards the first spring weekend spent in the garden.

Me too bells! The thought of getting back in the allotment in march keeps me sane! Giddyup, I think sweet peas like a lot of organic matter, frequent watering, protection from slugs and snails when they are small. And a sunny position. Not fussy at all!
