I've uploaded a pic of the 'garden' for reference. As you can hopefully see, it is tiered with small walls. We moved in last year and still haven't got round to doing anything, mainly because we are utterly clueless.

Should we cut some borders into the lawn above and below each wall (iyswim?)?

Seriously, even the most basic advice would be gratefully received. We're garden numpties

brown turkey fig

I think the lavatera will be ok oin the shade but ideally will flower and generally do better in the sun

thanks

(sorry disappeared due to work crisis)

have a budleia at one side already. neighbour showed me a really unusual mimosa bush (teeny yellow flowers, reddish stems) but not sure it would stand up to bossy rosemary. what about something with giant leaves? (another neighbour has some triffid-like stuff)

I am a fan of fatsia japonica which is supposed to be a plant for shade but I have 3 in full sun that are growing like mad.

I tried heathers in my garden and they seems to need quite an acid soil to do well, mine all died.

I would say go for clemitis ('s?), they are lovely and don'r require much attention.

I love Japanese maples (acers), They like acid soil too but I have three in my london clay garden and they have been OK.

acer

Can grow it in a pot so it doesn't get too big.

Also second the fatsia, they don't flower but lovely green leaves.

And Bishop of Landaff dalias - lovely!

Just wanted to say a big thank you for all your help

I've had a fantastic weekend in the garden, and it's looking much less bare. We've got strawberry plants, chamomiles, heather, ferns, wild geraniums, runner beans, astilbe, fatshedera lizei (similar to fatsia japonica), a japanese maple, evergreen honeysuckle, rosemary, thyme, evening primrose, white borage, clary sage and various wild flowers.

Couldn;t get hold of any lamium or ajuga reptans.

I'll try to post some more photos as they settle into their new homes

Thanks again!
