Afternoon
hello WhoKnows :) It is getting itchy to get on time , isn't it . Every year starting off in a better state is a bonus - it means you are on top of things from the beginning, and aren't wasting precious time sorting it out to sow and plant .
It is very damp, warm and grey now . Probably Saturday before I can go and pick veg - DGS has chicken pox, so doing extra childcare atm !

I'm very jealous of you all having actual ready-dug beds to sow/plant in... Envy
I'm in the process of digging up pretty much our entire garden - fortunately our Landlord knows that I am a gardener and has given me free reign to do whatever I want. But, I am missing my garden in the UK - I had spent sooo many hours perfecting it and I just keep thinking of how good it will be looking this year.
Still, on the positive side, all my chilli seeds have germinated! And I've discovered Seedaholic...more seeds are on the way!
Serendipity How's your dog?

SerendipityFelix · 06/03/2018 18:41

A few chillies and peppers are germinating now, and loads of lettuces :-) I was almost giving up on the peppers, they can take a while!

Some pottering at the plot today, and planted up the new ericaceous bed with blueberries, cranberries and lingonberries. Everything that’s in is doing well, and I feel reasonably organised about the season ahead which is an odd feeling!

Looking ahead the rest of the week I’ve got time on Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning, Saturday looks like rain so I think Thursday will be plot (re-weeding the bed the potatoes will go in, and perhaps starting to dig trenches ready) and Saturday will be sowing my second batch of seed indoors as I haven’t got round to it yet - aubergine, tomatoes, melon and basil up next. I think I might need a few more propagators to be honest, am tight for space already.

It’s exciting time of year, just hope I can keep on top of things... it all went wrong last year when I wasn’t able to put enough time in during April/May.

Does anyone else follow allotment channels on YouTube? I find them really useful in motivating me to keep going and picking up tips and ideas etc.

SerendipityFelix · 06/03/2018 18:43

Oh - ddog is doing much better, thanks. Quiet and clingy for a few days, but she’s over the worst of it. Must have just been a bug. She was digging her own little potato trench today when we down at the plot!

brownelephant · 06/03/2018 18:53

anyone know if cuttings from a fig tree are possible and might bear fruit?

UnaOfStormhold · 07/03/2018 07:21

Looking forward to a bit of gardening time next week as I'm on leave - need to get the raised beds weeded and sow a few bits (carrots, beetroot, broad beans, possibly some peas) and hopefully get my edible perennial bed planted up at last!

CrabappleBiscuit · 07/03/2018 07:22

browne rhs website has a good section on that, it’s not hard and they will grow into tree with friut.

SerendipityFelix · 07/03/2018 07:39

It’d be a hardwood cutting, I watched this video on how to strike them (later videos he follows up how they do), seemed easy enough.

brownelephant · 07/03/2018 07:47

thanks, will give it a go.
will pollard my tree soon, as it's growing too fast, so have plenty of material to try.

bookbook · 08/03/2018 13:42

No plot for me as yet - it was snowing again this morning !
I have just been out to the shops - in case anyone is looking for stuff, Aldis have their fruit bushes trees in :)

Thanks for the Aldi tip. We had snow too.

PostNotInHaste · 08/03/2018 19:11

Hello, can I join you please? Got the call that I’m at the top of allotment list Tuesday evening. Worst possible timing as have hospital appointments but couldn’t bring myself to say no. Went to look thinking I’d get a small one possibly but there was one that will be lovely tucked away in a corner overlooking fields.

Signed papers on it this evening, I need to get to work clearing it ! So excited to have one again.

bookbook · 08/03/2018 19:46

Welcome Post :) - good to 'see' you . Exciting time to get one, before spring has truly sprung. Being nosey ( as all these lot know :) ) - whereabouts are you - North/South/East or West ? Is it in reasonable condition? .
Just a few well trotted out tips - do a plan - so where does the sun come over , is there a shed , , that sort of thing . Check where you get water , is there a society to join, where you can get manure cheap seeds etc. Biggest tip of all - Its a marathon, not a sprint Grin

gussyfinknottle · 08/03/2018 21:05

Congratulations Post. Happy planting!

PostNotInHaste · 08/03/2018 21:45

Thank you both Smile I’m on the cusp of the south east and west. It’s a newish site, been going less than a year. The plot has been taken back from the guy next to it as they don’t feel he’s cultivated enough of his original plot - raised beds but a lot of grass. The sun sets down one end of it From what I swam I think so will get a decent amount during the day.

Water from a pump and no shed but am allowed one. Long term plan will be to have one which will allow for water collection. Have to apply for permission which I’ll do soon and they want slabs for a base so i’ll see if I can get hold of some cheap ones. Shed won’t go available this year as currently storing building materials in my garden . But figure if I get slabs down it’s less to cultivate.

It does need a fair amount of work, one section isn’t too bad and they’ve said they’ll weedkiller the other bit when weather warmer which I think I’ll run with. Had ideas of doing some no dig beds but cardboard got vetoed annoyingly. I know the site manager from previous allotment days and he knows health situation and said he’ll go easy on me. I said i’ll be looking at doing squash and pumpkins and borlotti beans rather than runners, borlotti were clearly a new one on him!

Have some rhubarb , gooseberries, thornless blackberries, raspberry canes that can go in and there is a small strawberry patch. I’m going to do things that don’t need constant harvesting (courgettes will be done at home!) so sweet corn, perpetual spinach, chard, parsnips (if I can get them to germinate!) possibly oca, leeks, kale as well as pumpkins squash and borlotti. If I end up out of action for longer than a couple of weeks that will help. If all goes well then I can look at other things, main thing is I’m going to have to try and get a good run at it the next 6 weeks or so and will try to get things started at home as much as possible this year - bit of a faff but need instant impact. Very excited and feel a bit like I’ve won the lottery !

gussyfinknottle · 09/03/2018 07:00

Look at No Dig. Other posters do it. Trying it this year. V excited myself.

gussyfinknottle · 09/03/2018 07:02

You don't need cardboard for no dig. Just sling good compost on top and watch for weed growth.

SerendipityFelix · 09/03/2018 07:12

Welcome PostNot and congratulations! Sounds like you’re raring to go.

No cardboard but weedkiller is ok? That’s bizarre logic! I don’t get allotment rules at all. My site allows bonfires October-March, but you’re not allowed to use a garden incinerator, which would keep the burning manageable and under control. I don’t have space on my plot for a conventional bonfire, nor the confidence to manage it and not burn down trees/fences/sheds nearby!

PostNotInHaste · 09/03/2018 07:29

Don’t go there Serendipity ! My eyebrows might have shot up when he said no cardboard. It doesn’t say that in the terms havin* checked but in the interest of being cut some slack i’m not going to point that out. It does say no weedkiller though but apparently the site manager is allowed to do it. Your no incinerator rule doesn’t make sense either. We have a communal bonfire area which suits me as also not confident to set light to things.

Gussyfinknottle will be really interested to see how your no dig goes. I hadn’t thought of doing it without cardboard for some reason. Think I’ll try a section and see how I go. Have filled a raised bed at home doing It , it’s scrabbling about to get all the materials though. Am definitely going to dump a load of dried leaves and manure on this autumn. Am doing a Hugelkultur bed at home to get rid of a large tree stump and some tree prunings. Was thinking of found similar at allotment but I think allotment guy might pass out bless him, he’s highly unconvinced about raised beds as it is! So that might be for next year once i’ve had time to work on him. I help at school allotment so might get that going there then show him photos.

Apologies I keel rambling on, excitement will wear off soon and I’ll calm down !

UnaOfStormhold · 09/03/2018 07:51

Hello Post, you sound like you're not too far away from me. Congratulations on your new allotment, happy growing!

CrabappleBiscuit · 09/03/2018 07:56

No dig is fantastic, I live near the sea so have ready access to loads of seaweed to use as a layer.

Wh0KnowsWhereTheT1meG0es · 09/03/2018 08:05

Welcome Post, it is a great time of year to get started, I got my plot in Aug which wasn't great but I do love this time of year with everything starting to spring into life. I am also "SE sometimes described as SW". We are allowed cardboard but not carpet. No bonfires at all (small site hemmed in by houses with short gardens).

I spent a happy half hour in the sunshine cutting back all my autumn fruiting raspberries yesterday. I need some more strawberry plants - I took a load of runners home and stuck them in a seed tray of compost in the shed but they haven't made it through winter. I also need some seed potatoes - mine were supposed to be chitting in the same shed but appear to have rotted. So I'm going to try and pop to a garden centre later.

gussyfinknottle · 09/03/2018 08:53

Just been to Aldi. Fruit tree tastic. Compost tastic (usually go to B&M). Seed potato tastic(already have mine). Cloche tastic.

gussyfinknottle · 09/03/2018 09:07

Done a sort of hugelktur thing in my raised bed - double height bed.
I was a keen gardener then ill health knocked it out of me. As part of my "therapy" I'm going for it again this year. No dig is a revelation for me.

TheHoundsofLove · 09/03/2018 12:41

I love the Charles Dowding videos on Youtube - so informative and he has such a gentle, calming presence about him. He has one video where he shows 2 different no-dig methods of clearing weeds.
I've tried both methods but have now settled on digging my beds to get them started and remove all the weed roots and then I go to a no-dig system.
