Soggy garden lawn

I've just bought a new home, total renovation project, but whilst the builders are busy on the house I want to sort the garden. First problem the previous owners recently took an old oak tree out of the lawn and according to neighbours the garden has been soggy ever since. The garden is large with a few other trees but not many shrubs, arr there any plants which will soak up the sogginess? I also have a toddler so no plants with poisonous berries please

A willow tree would like rich damp soil probably Burt may take a few years to get large enough to make a real difference.

A better solution might be to put in some proper drainage - particularly if your builders have a digger on site. Is there a ditch or space for a soakaway that you could connect a land drain to?

Lots of useful information on this topic at www.pavingexpert.com/drain03.htm

Getting the drainage right upfront will make it easier to have a wide range of plants and a more successful lawn.
