PLANTS................I have no idea what to buy

I need some plants for the patch of soil under my front window. They need to be hard to kill and stay there all year round, oh and not grow any taller than about 3/4 ft.

I have no idea at all what I should be looking at so would really appreciate someone telling me and if at all possible posting a link so I know what they look like.

TIA

North/south/east/west facing?

Herbs might be a good idea; rosemary, thyme, oregano and chives all seem to be fairly hardy in our garden. They flower and smell great and you can use them in cooking.

Not a clue which way it faces.

It gets a bit of sun but more shade and the soil is usually quite wet.

Hadn't thought of herbs, good idea.

MInt takes over so be careful if you get any of that, though its lovely fresh!

Herbs are useful, but aren't very interesting to look at. Most of the useful ones (rosemary, thyme, oregano) like lots of sun and hate being in wet soil. Mint would thrive there though.

What about those mini trees, erm conifer type ones but ones that don't grow really tall ?? I like those but have no idea what they are called.

What about cotoneaster

OK, it can look a bit municipal, but it gives year round interest, is impossible to kill, has lovely red berries, and thrives in most conditions.

NuttyMuffins · 02/04/2007 16:48

Hmm am not overly keen on it, but if it is impossible to kill then it's robably a good one for me to have.

Do you like grasses?

NuttyMuffins · 02/04/2007 17:01

Heathers are nice too, but you need ericacious (sp?) soil. We chose plants for our garden by nosing at what the neighbours had and then looking them up in a book we bought at the garden centre. Kaffir lilies are nice but I think they spread. What about a rose?

hebes are mostly hardy and you can get all different types and sizes. Most are evergreen and some have pretty flowers. Are difficult to kill off
