When is it best to move a Peony?

I have a couple of Peony plants that I would like to relocate in the garden. They originally came from my mum's house, and they have flowered well for many years, but I am not sure when is the best time of year to move them. They are just starting to die back after flowering.

Part of me wants to leave them where they are as I would hate to kill them off as they remind me of my DM!

Any suggestions greatfully received!

Move in autumn to a well drained sunny spot according to HRS website, and don't plant too deep.
Says, it may take a couple of years for plant to settle.
Cutting back the foliage a bit should help too.

RHS not HRS - I've no idea who they are!

Tree peony or herbaceous?
This will make a big difference.

Herbaceous peonies can be lifted and split, I did all of mine in June before moving house and they are looking fine in their pots.

Tree peonies are a different matter. They are very sensitive to disturbance and won't take kindly to being moved.

Sorry for the delay in responding - it's been a bit crazy the last few days! Thank you for you replies Jenesuis and Wingedharpy. They are herbaceous Peony. I'm just deciding where to move them to now - and fingers crossed they will survive!

Thank you again for your help. Smile
