Sorry for the poor photo but I keep forgetting to ask and was just watering my pots so took one!

Any idea what this is? A friend dug them out of her new garden and I save anything so stuck them into a pot to see what they would do! They have never flowered and I wondered if they were just foliage or if I was not keeping them correctly.

I have googled but can't work it out! Would appreciate the help if anyone knows!

Looks like Crocosmia. When did you pot them up? They should be flowering now, with long orange spike flowers.

Ahh yes thank you! I planted them about a year ago... but they were in a poor state with no real leavea

I second crocosmia.

Although I just googled again and although the leaves look superficially similar they are ribbed and the bulbs do not look the same, when I planted them they were 3 fat circular bulbs vertically on top of one another

Will try and remember to take a better photo in the morning!

They do look like crocosmia but I think they could also be bearded iris - does it have a rhizome like this at the bottom?

No, you are right, I found a google image with a variety with the correct bulb! Now I will try and treat them a little better and will hopefully get them to flower next year

I think it might be crocosmia lucifer which has red flowers not orange and slightly thicker leaves. I planted some bulbs of this variety this year and they haven't flowered whereas my crocosmia mombrechia (orange flowers) blooms every year no trouble. Fingers crossed its the same thing as mine and will flower next year for you. Some of the older foliage will die back but its a good evergreen which looks nice all year. Spreads loads though, so pots are ideal.

The corms like buttons (bottom left on your photo) are Crocosmia, the longer orange ones may be Day Lilies? Not sure....

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 30/08/2017 08:00

You won't be able to tell from the bulbs what colour the flowers will be, but they are definitely Crocosmia as lots of people have said. They are also known by the name Montbretia.
