Can anyone identify this shrub? (Picture)

I've been given this shrub but want to know what it is so that I can plant it in the right place.

The leaves are just leaf shape and green, so no clue there and the flowers are very small and magenta and cream coloured.

The picture isn't very clear but it looks like a fuchsia. Could you show the flowers close up.

Pheasant berry I think, we have one. It grows quite tall.

Newtssuitcase · 27/08/2017 15:30

Ah yes it could be, I can't really see the flowers. If so then yes I have two right in front of me and they are 8 foot tall and five foot across.

Does it look like this OP?

Yes, it looks like pheasant berry - Leycesteria formosa

Mine seem to grow happily pretty much anywhere. The two in front of me are in a North facing bed with tall trees behind them. I also have one on the driveway in dappled shade and one at the bottom of the garden on the edge of woodland which gets a fair amount of sun.

I would say the size is your main restriction. My big two up here near the house are at the front of the beds and they shouldn't be really since they are enormous. They flower forever though and so I don't want to risk moving them and kill them in the process.

Can always rely on mumsnet! Thank you that looks just right, though I am a bit horrified at the size as I've got a very small garden. I do have a particularly rampant jasmine which needs to come down so I can put it there.

I was thinking pheasant berry too

Newtssuitcase · 27/08/2017 17:20

It'll take a while to get to that sort of size though OP. Mine have been here for years. Probably a good 15 years given how long we've been in the house. Just checked on the RHS website (search also under Himalayan honeysuckle) and it says 2.5m high 2.5 m wide but 5-10 years to reach maturity.

You can be quite brutal in pruning them. You can cut them right down to the ground and they just grow new shoots. However you might not want to spend time doing this. I always think its easier to have things the right size in the first place rather than having to spend lots of time keeping them under control

Olympiathequeen · 28/08/2017 08:58

Relieved that it won't turn into the monster like the jasmine and I'm quite happy to prune it down so I'll just plant it in a nice spot rather than dig up the jasmine.

It can grow 6ft in one season and so I would still assume its going to be a large plant.
