Potentially silly garden hose question

How do I know what hose/tap connector I need?

The hose I bought came with a bit to attach to the tap. It never seemed to fit properly and there was always some water squirting out. I'm not sure what we've done to it recently but it now doesn't seem to be letting any water get to through to the hose as it's all squirting out the sides!

No idea where to start? Do I need a new hose? A new connector thingie? How do I know what I should be buying? Help!

Dose your hose have a maker name, such as Hozelock? There are specific attachments for specific manufacturers. I bought a cheap replacement for a broken attachment, but it didn't work. The plastic washer did, so I was able to mend the broken one!

Sometimes if the hose is kinked or twisted further down it's length then the water won't get through and the pressure will make the water squirt out at the tap if there is a poor connection .

Has the end of your tap got a thread that you screw the connector on to . Like a screwing a nut onto to a bolt .

Maybe try another connector ,you can get them from lots of DIY ( B&Q etc ) .I find it very hard to get a good connection ,sympathies .

Maybe take old connector with you to get correct size ?
I think there's generally only 2 sizes to choose from .

sunnyhills · 21/08/2017 21:50

Is it an outside or inside tap ?

CremeDeSudo · 21/08/2017 22:15

It's outside. We're in a new build if that helps? The connecter is threaded on and the water is coming from the join between the connecter and the thicker bit at the end of hose. I'll try unravelling the hose tmw then thank you for responding!

Maybe the hose end has come loose ? I have to push mine onto the tap piece and it clicks .

I've got this set up ,tho a different make . It's easy to replace the end on the hose ,you just unscrew and pull.

But there does seem quite a lot on the market ,different types .And I think Gardena might be a little better than Hozelock .

If you're still in trouble you could post some pictures and we might be able to help more ?

Ok so turns out DH managed to break the connecter entirely and it's snapped off into the middle bit!

So! Recommendations for a garden hose? Lol

Sometimes my garden hose gets a bit leaky at the tap. I cut about an inch off the end using a sharp knife (be careful!), unscrew connector, push the hose back on and screw it back together again.

I just use the basic plastic connectors from Wilko. Would this do the trick?

GingerKitCat · 25/08/2017 19:13

This is how mine looks. The tap has a thread that the piece in my hand threads onto. The bit on the end of the hose clicks on and off with ease and rarely leaks (see above).

Are there different sizes? How do I know which to get?

This is what we had but it was squirting out water between the bit that's screwed onto the tap and the connecting bit. Nothing was making it to the hose. Now the bit that was on the tap has snapped off and is stuck in the connecting bit!

I thought they were universal but don't quote me!

When I screwed mine back and turned the tap on water started squirting out the top! The part was securely threaded onto the tap but screwing it a bit further on cured the problem.

sunnyhills · 26/08/2017 19:55

I think they do come in different sizes sadly .

Can you take the old one off and take it with you ?

I took the old one to Homebase and I've bought a replacement. Still had a 'mare getting it to work, but it does now hurrah! Thank you wise MNrs Smile
