NW facing garden??

Please tell me about your NW facing gardens

I am fantasising about buying a house that's come on the market near me. The only drawback that I can see is the NW facing garden. It's fairly large (21x7.2m). It's surrounded by similar sized gardens and is bordered with mature shrubs and trees which I'd cut back to let the light in.

At the moment we have a similar sized east facing garden, which is lovely. We get sun all day until about 7pm. As a keen gardener and sun lover, would I regret giving this up for a NW facing plot?

I'm assume it is 21 deep? It all depends on how tall the house is. Just go view it in the late afternoon to see how much of a shadow the house will cast.

I would not buy it if you are a sun lover. The side of the house facing the garden will always be gloomy. I love just stepping out the back and sitting on a sunny patio.Having sun at the end of the garden would be no compensation for me.

Part of my garden faces north west, which just means it gets the sun mid-late afternoon. There's just about enough sun to grow a climbing rose against the house, so it's not particularly dark.

But my garden only has a hedge around it. There are no buildings (other than my own house), or mature trees that are throwing shadows on it. That could make quite a difference.

As a previous poster said, you should go and have a look at it in late afternoon. And find out who owns the trees and shrubs you're planning to cut back, if these are growing on the boundary of the garden.
