What blooms through autumn and winter?

What can I plant now that will flower over autumn and winter?

I have a part Sun part shade border in the back garden, some shady containers and the front garden that is in full sun to the extent that things go there to dry out it's so full sunny.

I've got a vague idea about cyclamens and crocuses. And winter pansies

I literally want at least to bloom through September to February.

But I can't work out what to buy and when to plant them :(

Any help?

I'm not sure there's much that does that. Cyclamen bloom in late autumn, but don't last long. Hellebore and winter heathers come in January. Winter pansies in my garden do fuck all until April. Not bothering with them again.

Winter jasmine will flower through winter, witch Hazel and snowdrops.

pameladoove · 15/08/2017 21:28

Autumn glory, anemones and rudbeckia for autumn.

Winter jasmine (jasminium nudiflorium) is delightful with yellow star-shaped flowers all winter.

Winter berries are also lovely for colour - pyrancantha and holly are some of my faves.

I'm not sure what it's called, hopefully someone can confirm but bloody boxwood, Cornus.... it is a fairly unobtrusive shrub but in winter the bare twigs have a lovely red colour. My mum has one in a position where it catches the low winter sun and it just glows

pameladoove · 15/08/2017 21:38

7days - do you mean dogwood? It's just beautiful.

TheSolitaryBoojum · 15/08/2017 21:47

I've got a 4 season garden, so from Nov-March, apart from bulbs I have
Shrubs: Japanese quince, 2varieties one red and one white. Viburnum which is scented and pink, winter honeysuckle, magnolia Stellata, a winter clematis that I've forgotten the name of but has lovely bell flowers, sweet box, dogwood and witchazel.
Flowers: wallflowers, sweet violets, lungwort, and I plant early and late flowering narcissi as well as the usual bulbs.

That said, I am in the SE, so spring here is around 3 weeks earlier than in the North.

Justnowthisone · 15/08/2017 21:48

Wow!!!! Thanks so much all ❤️

Early camellias, clematis, daphne, mahonia

MrsBertBibby · 16/08/2017 07:30

You need to get the right Cornus (dogwood) . We have loads of the bog standard kind and there's nothing glowy about it!

There are a couple of cultivars that are indeed spectacular.

Pansythepotter · 16/08/2017 07:57

When you say bloom, do you mean flowers or just colour, here is my list
Rich Stem colour

Acer Sango Kaku scarlet stems throughout winter
Cornus Midwinter fire
Cockburnianus glows white all winter (just be aware that it is a bramble with vicious thorns and spreads everywhere)

Long flowering
Winter pansy,
buy well established plants from a good supplier for long lasting display
Holly and Heathers. I have bought mine cheaply from Wilko and they have Ben brilliant

Flowers
Winter Jasmine, I hate them personally
Prunus Subhiritella, Winter Cherry, stunning

Lovely flowers and perfume
witchhazel
Quince
Daphne

Berries
Cotoneaster
Skimia
Pyracantha
Holly

Bulbs
Aconite
Crocus
Snowdrops
Bluebells
Erythronium
Fritallaria
Hellibkres

My hanging baskets and pots of petunias and lobelia seem to have out-flowered themselves already, and despite my efforts with liquid seaweed appear sad, washed out and beyond redemption. Sad

I planned on dumping them all and replanting with winter pansies (garden ready from good online supplier) - but is mid-August too early?

I'm not expecting flowering throughout winter, just a show for the rest of summer and maybe into autumn?

Justnowthisone · 16/08/2017 12:16

My position too exactly!!!

Well I tried posting on the Gardeners World forum as well @Justnow, but nothing, not a single response!

It clearly is an answer no one knows or cares about. Shall we just be rebels, junk our declining summer pots, replace them with pansies in mid-August and hope for the best?

calmanban · 16/08/2017 17:51

heuchera and heucherella.... whilst they don't flower over winter they do keep their foliage and it is the most glorious range of colours.

Justnowthisone · 16/08/2017 18:21

I have ripped out all he fading straw ey stuff five minutes ago. I've got empty baskets now.

Yes, Dogwood, thank you PamelaDoove .
Mum calls it bloody Dogwood I think the official name is something like Cornus sanguinus. Sounds like a Harry Potter character.
Also she has something else, it's like a bacon is but pink flowers in January.

7Days · 16/08/2017 22:37

Like a begonia that should say. Thank you phone

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 16/08/2017 22:38
