Tree identification please?

I live in a new build (4 years in now) and when we moved in various people gave us plants to start us off.

One of the thinks I was given was a stick in a pot.

It has developed very quickly into quite a tree. Does anyone know what it is? I have a suspicion it's a huge one... Confused

Sycamore

Looks like a London plane tree. They do get big but v good as a de-pollutant which is why you seee them a lot in cities. Hope that helps!

GinnyWreckin · 09/08/2017 19:08

Looks like a sycamore. They smell like semen.

if you are going to plant it in a garden, make sure you plant it well away from a wall, as the roots will disturb it, and also where it won't shade anyone else's garden, or you'll never hear the end of complaints about it.

It's a forest tree really, so if you get a chance to plant it somewhere other than a residential setting, that would be ideal. Bring it on a walk with you and plant it somewhere in alkali soil.

They grow to about 30foot, and you'll have to trim it. They grow very fast, and tree surgeons aren't cheap.

I think sycamore too. Will grow vair big if you aren't careful.

bananafanana1 · 09/08/2017 19:15

Wow, thank you.

Yikes! Sycamores and Plane trees look huge! Shock our garden probably couldn't take such a beast, I think this one will be coming on a walk with me, luckily we have woodlands at the end of the road so I'll find it a new home! It's a shame as I was enjoying watching it grow.

Thanks everyone

if you want to plant it, plant it in the pot, that will restrict gowth.
looking at it again, the stem looks too light. so maybe it's a plane...

London Plane

I used to design foundations as part of my job and had to do site visits to identify the trees nearby! Pretty sure it's a London Plane. They are immense, and you really don't want one anywhere near your house!

Puffpaw · 09/08/2017 20:47

Ah I always wondered which plant it was that smelt like semen, lifelong mystery solved! Thank you 😊

Not sycamore. Plane.
