Just that really - just wondering if greenhouses get put in the sale at the end of the summer?

Thanks

Yes, I'd start browsing the internet now and see if there's any bargains.

there's always a few in my local facebook selling page. dh got one for 30 quid from two streets over... just had to take it down himself and move it.

Thanks - I really want one but probably won't start using it till early next year. My fingers keep hovering over the buy now but I love a bargain and would feel pretty miffed if it went down in the sale in the next few weeks. Never really looked at greenhouses before.

It's worth paying extra for safety glass, as horticultural glass is quite thin and easily broken. When it shatters it breaks in shards.

I have finally bought one! So excited, now need to get some things to grow over winter!

Fingers crossed it should be delivered Friday.

Any tips to what I need??

Sorry if this is a daft question - am debating getting one too and have never owned one before. Do you need to have a heater in a greenhouse over the winter or will plants survive without?

WandaWitch · 23/08/2017 19:11

Also someone said to me that you have to have scrubbable surfaces because you get mould issues in them and have to be able to clean it all down quite regularly to keep it hygienic - does anyone know if that is correct?

nibblingfingernails · 23/08/2017 19:20

Oh Wanda - I honestly don't know about the heater - never even entered my head!

I've never owned a greenhouse before either and only been a couple of years since Iv'e been interested in gardening.

I have gone for a cheap one to start me off - so excited at the prospect of growing from seeds! (well attempting any way!) Oh and small plug plants.

I'd be interested too, it's on my wishlist!

Wanda, you can have aluminium benches which are easy to keep clean, but are colder than wooden ones in winter (if that's important). You only need a heater if you are going to overwinter tender plants, so not necessary if raising plants from seed in spring, or starting veg for outside growing.
I have two large professional greenhouses which house my very large collection of cacti and succulents, and have thermostatically controlled electric heaters, which keep winter temperatures above 5c, so heaters are usually used for collectors of specialist plants. Having said that, a heater is useful for getting an early start in spring while there is still frost at night - it all depends on what you're going to use the greenhouse for!
