Can o' Worms - anyone got one? Can you tell me about it please?

Thinking about investing, but they are quite expensive, so I'm wondering if it's worth it? My main compost bin's right down the end of the garden and I can't be bothered half the time to traipse down there, so I'm thinkin ghtat a wormery by the back door might be a good idea.

But I wondered, do you have to get a "babysitter" when you go away for a week/fortnight?

The other thing is, there's not that much info on the website about what you actually have to do - for example, what's the coir block for? Do you have to do anything other than take the lid off and put the waste in then put the lid back on? How do you know when to swap the trays round and what happens when you do it?

Any advice welcome - thanks

Not that I know all the details but my friend's got a wormery and sings its praises. She says it's amazing and the best thing they've ever brought. We might get one soon!

Oh, that's good to hear. Thanks.

Anyone else out there know any more?

hiya - i have one... well a vastly cheaper version i found via a link from here i think (?)... anyways, its in its infancy here so im hardly an expert... but

babysitter? no... theyll survive a fortnight i would think. depends on how well settled they are (and how much they are eating) but im pretty sure you can just put in enough food and moisture, leave the tap at the bottom open to prevent drowning and go away.

you need to insulate them a bit from the extreme cold (wrap carboard box or bubble wrap around.

they dont do much in the cold, and they seem to take ages to 'get going' as does any compost it would seem!

the coir block is what they live in to start with. you soak it overnight and it turns into mush... its all in the instructions. they come with some of the 'food' they were reared on too, just to get them settled in.

you swap the trays when they are half full, but mine havnt even started eating my food yet, so no experience of doing that yet!

theres a list of food that are good and bad for them... apparently cooked is best to start with, and citrus/onions will kill em...
