Complete novice here! I've recently had my garden overhauled and m spending a lot of time in it. I am thinking along the lines of getting a greenhouse, pretty sure I don't need a massive one as I really don't have a big garden.

What am I looking for?

What size would be good?

Any help would greatly be appreciated, at mo I keep looking at this one - www.greenhousestores.co.uk/6x4-Green-Halls-Popular-Greenhouse-Horticultural-Glass.htm

Is it a good size, price etc....

Thanks in advance

I appreciate cost and space are a consideration, but It's a good idea to get toughened, glass, as it's safer. The one you've selected could be rather small if you want to grow tomatoes and other greenhouse veg. As they do take up a fair bit of room.
Are you erecting it yourself?

Yes I would be putting it up by myself.

Hadn't thought about toughened glass!

I have got this one and love it.

Suits me perfectly as I have limited time, kitted out with space efficient staging and shelves and it is perfect for me together with two aluminium cold frames.

Lots of people told me to buy bigger (my garden is an acre) but I didn't, I bought something to let me do what I planned to and it works. I work more than full time and find filling the space I have relaxing.

The simplicity greenhouses came out really well in reviews, full height eaves and the diagonal bracing made them stronger.

Toughened glass though, shatters like a car windscreen, is a must with children imo.

Be aware that small greenhouses get VERY hot in the summer months, so it will require some sort of shading and plenty of ventilation. The advice usually given is to buy the largest you can afford and fit in your space, once you start growing plants you'll find they are never large enough!

nibblingfingernails · 23/07/2017 21:43

Where I want to place it has no shading! So that could potentially be a problem.

You see Nan, that is often the advice dished out but we are all different.

My father had a three acre garden all our lives, in his retirement his greenhouse is actually smaller than mine because that is all he needs to allow him to grow what he wants to grow and he keeps us all in geraniums, tomatoes and annuals.

It depends on what you want to grow and how much, I have got a walled garden and a separate walled orchard so don't feel the need to grow much veg inside because I have got sheltered parts in every direction.

One size or theory does not fit all.

No nibbling, you just need some shading and some venting. Mine has auto louvre and roof openings, they work.

I do not have soil so to speak in my garden. I has 3 terraces - a terrace of decking, a terrace of lawn and a terrace of large pebbles. I have recently had the middle terrace laid to lawn, before that it was another terrace of pebbles.

What I am doing at the moment is trying to grow flowers in pots, but from early next year I would love to grow from seed flowers to go in my numerous pots!

Automatic vents, and leave the door open in summer! Ours is 6x4, we grow 2 cucumber plants and about 15 chilli plants in summer, plus we start other plants off in it before planting out. If we had more room, an 8x6 would be much better.

A friend has suggested this one -www.diy.com/departments/palram-harmony-6x4-polycarbonate-greenhouse/211830_BQ.prd

Don't forget to look on gumtree. There are lots going on our area, and if you're going to be putting it up, taking it down is just the opposite ! Smaller ones are often free..

thanks - will take a look!
