Small square garden anyone?

Just that really. Does anyone have any pictures of their garden they could share. My garden is about 4m sq. Lawn with narrow borders. Was thinking circular lawn maybe?

I don't have pictures of square but last year I redesigned my rectangular garden. I think a good way to start is to get a piece of square black card. Then cut out lots of different shapes on white paper. Circles, ovals, equalateral and isosceles triangles. Squares, rectangles S and Z shapes.

Try placing them on the card in various angles to see what hits you. Mix the shapes, for example place a circle for the lawn, with an inverted triangle overlapping it. Draw. Big S from corner to corner or lots of random triangles coming on from the sides. Then draw in paths, steps, patio and flower beds.

Think about whether your planting is going to be formal or soft. My personal view is that angular works best with formal planting, curves are best with softer random planting.

One tip. Lawn shapes where the turf tapers to a point or is very narrow will always be brown in summer and will probably crumble and disappear so when you are working out the shapes of borders or lawns you should consider this.

Good luck!

If it's small I would maybe skip the lawn and pave with spaces for rock plants or camomile (which you can walk on as in a camomile lawn ) with climbers found the side and also maybe climbing up a small tree in one corner. Positioned depending on which way the garden faces i.e. Early morning sun or no sun. A circular garden sounds like hard work to edge and maintain to me.

If you search Pinterest for " circular lawn" you will get hundreds of photos.

Personally I'd not have a lawn and do this instead.

Kr1stina - I absolutely love that garden!

Excellent ! A tiny area of grass is a big hassle TBH. It's difficult to cut and gets chewed up in wet weather. Only really worth it if you need a soft surface for small baby to play on.

Can I just check that your garden is actually only 4m square ? So it's only 2 meters by 2 meters - smaller than a tiny bathroom ?

If your garden is small then the boundaries become even more important . Do you have walls / fences / hedge ?

Sorry think it's prob 4m x4m

Ah it's much bigger than that n, one meter is a large pace for an average height woman. That looks at least 6 paces. It's a perfectly normal sized back garden and could lovely with a bit of work and imagination.

So grass isn't a problem, yours looks fine from the photo.

If I were you I'd put use a bit of string and a pen to draw a big circle on the grass and dig out nice deep borders. Then put wires on the fences and plant climbers to cover them. Improve the soil first and mulch after.

You can get climbers really cheaply from Aldi / Lidl and other discount stores in the spring. I bought lots at £1.79 and potted then on until they were big enough to plant out. You need to keep them well watered and fed.

Then splash out on a couple of small trees for the two back corners and a few evergreen shrubs. Then you can fill in with flowers shrubs and perennials as you can beg borrow and steal them. Or sow some seeds ( dirt cheap ) .

We have a small square garden and went for lots of circles -- very happy with it!

Oh that's very nice lemon thyme. I like the design and the cream back wall. Are you going to plant more or keep a minimalist style?

I hope you are keeping that new turf well watered in this hot weatherSmile

LemonThyme82 · 21/07/2017 09:11

Thanks Kr1stina! We're keeping it minimalist. The garden was planted at the end of May, so the plants are growing well, turf is happy and green despite all the sun ☀️
