Cuttings

If someone rang your doorbell and asked if they could take a small cutting from your rather attractive fushia bush which cascades onto the pavement in front of your house, would you say yes ?

Cheeky or unreasonable ?

And what's the best way to get sage cuttings ? I can't get them to root in water (2 weeks on) and they rot in soil.

I'd definitely say yes. I'm trying to work up courage to ask someone on the next road for some seeds from their gorgeous astrantia ...

Have you put rooting powder on the cuttings and planted them in a gritty, very free-draining soil? Might be worth another go if not.

I would say yes.

NotToday my last lot are in soil with vermiculite but I could try soil with horticultural grit (it seemed quite coarse). I haven't tried rooting powder - does it make a difference ? I remember having a pot a decade ago and I didn't get fushia cuttings to strike (since then they have worked in soil).

I can't get rosemary to do either at the moment with heel cuttings and they are usually a doddle !

I shall pluck up the courage to ring the door bell.....

I would say yes.

Taking cuttings is a great way to get more plants and doesn't damage your plant at all. It would be nice if everyone went round each others gardens and took cuttings of what they liked. Would save a fortune on plant costs.

I would also say yes. My neglected sage ran to flower last year and I've just found several little seedlings nearby, so maybe that would work.

I'd be delighted to be asked!

I'd say yes, no skin off my nose and I love to encourage gardeners. Plants are so expensive nowadays.
