I have a couple of young clematis which I planted this year, they were approx 6 inches high. they are both now over 6ft tall and starting to flower but both of them are only made of one stem, nothing else is sprouting out at the base or sides. do i just ignore them for the rest of the year or should i be cutting them back at some point to encourage them to bush out?

Feed them and then watt till spring when you will see budding shoots lower down the stem. Then prune them to just above the budding shoot and feed again.

I'd leave them for now.

Summer flowering clematis flower on new growth, so should be cut back every spring to about 8-10 inches above ground level. There will be plenty of time next year to encourage them to bush out a bit more, but I'd enjoy the flowers for now!

Thank you both, just what I hoped to hear. My first buds are about to open and I am excited to find out what type it is (no label on the pot when given to me)
