How much can I hack back my geraniums?

They have grown really leggy, and flopped forwards (onto other plants) a lot. I think that cutting them back will encourage them to grow denser, but how much can I get away with before the plant suffers? Part of the problem is that they are in quite a shady patch - they are flopping forwards to get to the light, maybe, but they have plenty of flowers on so can't be too unhappy.
I've been delaying doing it until the flowers finish - because they look quite pretty - but in that time they have grown even leggier!
Thanks for any advice.

If we are talking perennial geraniums you can chop them back, a la ' Chelsea chop ' or 'Hampton Hack'.
If you chop them back after these flower shows they should spring back and possibly flower later on.

We really hack our perennial geraniums otherwise they'd take over .

Thanks, they are perennials so I'll just be brutal! Next year I'll try to be more organised and cut them back earlier in the year - I think they probably need a few prunes a year to keep them in shape.

Hack them back hard once the flowers look tired. If you're lucky they will clump up and flower again. If they are pink they are indestructible.

I cut mine down and then stick the stems in rooting powder and grow more.
I've just done the chop on a couple and the cuttings are doing brilliantly.

Thanks all!
They are the pink, indestructible ones.
Veronicat I would do this, but unfortunately have no need for anymore geraniums! I will maybe do a few, just in case. Even without rooting powder, many of the leggy bits have been cheerfully propogating themselves among the flower bed anyway, so I have no doubt that the cuttings will prosper!

I subscribe to the idea that you can never have to many Geraniums.
My DP disagrees as every available surface, piece of wall, borders and anywhere else I can stick pots are crammed with them.
Can you tell I love them? Wink🌸

Our garden is basically just grass , perennial geraniums and hydrangeas , I know what I like and I stick with it .
