Allotment question

Hello.

We have been offered an allotment close to our house and I'd like to ask a little advice.

There are two plots up for grabs. One is at the bottom of the site and at this time (6pm) is half shaded. The other plot gets full sun all day but is on the edge, next to lots of over grown trees and slightly less easy to get to. The people next door have allowed theirs to get very overgrown.

Which one would you lovely allotmenteers go for?

Thanks.

Easy to get to is important, mine is a PITA in this respect, easy to walk to but by car you have to reverse up a steep narrow track onto grass which is a mudbath in winter then barrow stuff 50m to the plot over a narrow uneven grassy path which means I end up skimping on compost, manure etc.

I wouldn't worry about the overgrown neighbouring plot too much, they can go from pristine to overgrown and back again in months so this can happen whichever plot you are on - the one next to me has had 4 owners in 4 years and has been through the cycle several times. Maybe ask if the person has given it up and if not how long they will be allowed to keep it if they don't sort it.

Shade - Mine is full sun most of the day and part shade by 6pm too and TBH in hot weather I'm very grateful for the shade in the evenings for working on it, it can be relentlessly hot during the daytime.

Thanks. The slightly shady one definitely has easier access. I thought I could just put a shed and some seats in the shade.

How far are they from the water?

GloriaV · 02/07/2017 19:33

Yes, if you aren't allowed to hose watering is hard work.

They are similar distances away from water. People seem to be using hoses.
