I moved into a new house about a month ago with a lovely garden but I don't know what most of the plants are or what to do with them. Does anyone recognise this? If so what do I need to do? It has some dead flower heads in it - do I just cut them off or do I need to cut it right back?

Thanks!

Peony I think. Dead head the flowers and let the greenery die back naturally before removing. It will sprout from the crown next spring.

Thanks Smile

Looks like a hellebore to me

Oh I think Trethew is right, sorry. For that you cut the leaves away in the Autumn.

Hellebore, ie Winter Rose. One of my faves and not cheap! Will look beautiful in Dec-Jan.

Thanks that's brilliant. I'm very happy with that Smile

Stupid question but do I cut all the leaves back or just the ones in bad shape?

No, it's a good question! And not easily answered. As much as I hate linking to DM, here is a good article by Monty Don on the matter (he adores hellebores):

Just remove dead, yellow or black ones - whenever in the year you see them. Right back to the ground.

I disagree, I think it's a peony. The leaves are ribbed.

Be careful cutting it back, there are two kinds of peonies. The herbaceous one is fine to cut back but if it has a woody stemmed framework then go gently on it as cutting back hard can kill it.

Miel you may well be right!

The reason I plumped for hellebore is that OP's picture shows what look like typical palmate Helleborus x hybridus leaves, and the spent flower stalks look to me more like hellebore than peony. Unfortunately OP only moved to the house last month so she can't tell us whether it flowered in Feb or June
