Can we play 'weed or plant'?

I planted some perennial bulbs and roots earlier in the year but didn't do anything as sensible as labeling them. So I've not been doing much weeding in case I pull an actual plant up, but now I'm not whether what have grown are weeds or actual plants. Any ideas what these might be?

My expert eye says all plants but I don't know what they're called Grin does that help?!

iwouldgoouttonight · 02/07/2017 13:39

Your expert eye sounds about as good as mine imsorryiasked Grin

I think that the first one could be a herb. The rest are definitely plants. HTH. Grin

BTW I have random unknowns in my tubs too so I'm just keeping them. Weeds are only plant's in the wrong places as they say.

JT05 · 02/07/2017 15:28

The first one looks like a type of Campanula and the fourth one looks like Astrantia.

iwouldgoouttonight · 02/07/2017 19:17

Thank you. Astrantia definitely rings a bell, I think I did buy some of those. They all seem quite nice but I'm hoping they flower. Especially the middle one which is about a tall as me, I'll feel a fool if I've just managed to grow a five foot weed.

First one definitely Campanula, I have it all over my back yard, it will spread into everything unless you keep very close tabs on it.
The others do look like plants but I can't name them, sorry Sad

iwouldgoouttonight · 03/07/2017 22:16

Thanks timtam23 I've just Googled campanula and it looks a lot nicer than mine does at the minute!

Might the one with strappy leaves be an alium? Although it should be out by now.

steppemum · 04/07/2017 09:47

I think the last one on the second post might be a helibore?
Don't think it grows from a bulb though.

I have a feeling the second one is a weed. I want to say ground elder, but it is too upright, so not that

timtam23 · 04/07/2017 16:17

Could the last one be Japanese anemone?

steppemum · 04/07/2017 16:48

Don't think it is a Japanese anemone, the divisions on the leaves are too deep.

iwouldgoouttonight · 04/07/2017 22:30

I've got a Japanese anemone and it looks different to that. If the second one is a weed it's the best treated weed ever, I've staked it so it doesn't fall over and I've watered it Grin

I used to have a foxglove growing in a similar place, it's not one of them is it?

Hmm. The middle one looks exactly like the giant weed (now a tree, whose name escapes me) that grows through the middle of our hedge. Sorry.

I'm normally quite good at Name That Plant, but the strappy-leaved one has me stumped. It is the only one, though, that looks as if it's growing from a bulb. The fourth plant is an astrantia.

MaudAndOtherPoems · 05/07/2017 00:15

Pretty sure our unwanted tree (sorry, tree) is an elder.

iwouldgoouttonight · 05/07/2017 08:27

Eurgh is that elder? We've got one of those growing over the fence from next door. The blossom smells horrible. Right I'm pulling that one up, stake or no stake!

I'm sure the spiky leaf ones are ones I planted but can't remember for the life of me.

It may have been these that I ordered.
Do any of these look like the spiky leaf one? cottage garden

I thought was that the second pic in your first post was a tree of some sort.

As the others aren't bindweed, buttercup or horsetail, I'd probably leave them to see what they are when they flower. They'll be easier to identify then.

MaudAndOtherPoems · 05/07/2017 10:00

The spiky-leafed one does look like a bulb, but I'm still not sure it's anything from that collection.

By the way, the aconitum is beautiful but extremely toxic. Take care when handling it and don't plant it anywhere where children or pets might get at it.
