Is this a lily? It's never flowered before.
We have a cat and there are a number of neighbouring cats. If it is then I will remove it.

It's a day lily, I've grown them for 40 years and never known a cat to go anywhere near them!

flumpybear · 01/07/2017 15:02

Looks like a day Lilly to me

flumpybear · 01/07/2017 15:03

X-posted with my mum Mavis flump 😂😂😂❤️

Lilies a extremely poisonous to cats. They will die if they get the pollen on them and then lick it off.
Chances are she would never go near it but it's not a risk I'm willing to take.

Day Lily's (Hemerocallis) are not in the Liliacea family.
Totally different and edible. Google edible flowers and don't worry.
Don't taste of much though!

Thanks Stay, however icatcare.org/advice/keeping-cats-safe/lilies seems to say that they are toxic.

Yes it's a lily and I'd remove it too. Lily's are a whole different class of toxicity to cats - as you know they can be fatal. Not like some plants which could just cause vomitting/ upset stomachs.

SnickersWasAHorse · 01/07/2017 23:20

Lots of things that are edible to people are toxic to animals.
Like chocolate and grapes for example.

That surprised me.
Interestingly Hemerocallis used to be classified in the Liliacea family but was moved, which makes more sense.
Dig it up I guess. No benefit in keeping it without enjoying the flowers.
I wonder how you protect your cats if they free range from Lily's and poisonous plant in other people's gardens? Genuine question.

SnickersWasAHorse · 02/07/2017 00:10

I know that I can't keep them away from lilies in other people's gardens and it is a risk but I can reduce the risk by not having a fatal plant in my own garden.

Also she only goes into the garden of my immediate neighbours and neither of them tend their gardens in any way. They don't have lilies.

You can't, I lost one of mine to suspected lily poisoning a while back. It was horrible. He went from sleek fit marauding little devil to a tiny collapsed little rag in days. Nothing the vets could do. Just awful.
