My house is on a slope and is about 2 foot lower than the top of my garden. at the top of my front garden there is a hedge made from Laylandi which have been cut off to prevent them growing higher at about 5 foot tall. they don't restrict any light and give us a sense of privacy as the very well used path the other side of the hedge is full of dog walkers ambling by and they would have a good view into our house through a massive living room window.
I want to maintain privacy but my DW hates the hedge and wants to replace it.
my question is what with? i dont want look out straight onto a brick wall. looking for suggestions
thank you

Is he happy with another hedge? Or must it be a wall or fence?

I think she would be ok with another hedge but personally i think its just swapping one for another and too much work for the same result

You could grow some climbing, rambling plants through the existing hedge, it would give you interest at the same time as privacy.

Beach hedges are the most attractive i think.
But as pp said, climbers such as clematis would be less work, though you might have to grow then in tubs, as leylandi tend to kill anything planted near

Beech or hornbeam are 'everbrown' in that they retain the dead leaves through the winter. They're slower growing than leylandii though, so take longer to establish, but that also means they are much less work.
