Does anyone know how I manage this plant ? It's getting a bit overgrown. Should I prune it and if so how ?

Many thanks

You can't prune this, you can cut off any dead leaves at the bottom and then take off a few more so the trunk is more exposed at the bottom but basically it is in the wrong place and will get bigger

Thankyou , it was here when I bought the house , we've been here 18 months and it seems to have doubled in size !

Maybe dig it out and move to a more appropriate site. Water well BEFORE and after moving. Then take off dead leaves.

CremeFresh · 20/06/2017 20:19

I think I'd struggle to dig it out and haven't really got anywhere else for it to go. I don't want to get rid of it completely because it's a lovely plant , I'll remove the lower leaves and see how it looks.

Can't prune as it's individual leaves rather than branches that will grow

it looks like a yucca

You might be able to dig some parts out from the edges to knock it back a bit

It's a Phormium, and they grow HUGE, (as you've discovered...) we had one many years ago, and ended up paying someone to dig it out, it's not an easy job. They can't be pruned and have no trunk or stems.

Yes it's a Yucca. At the moment it's the right conditions for flowering, which are quite spectacular. I'd give it a reprieve until the Autumn to see if you get a flower.
After that I'd move it to somewhere more appropriate or a large pot.

CremeFresh · 20/06/2017 21:15

Oh ! Didn't know it flowered , I'll wait and see if it does .

I'll have to get someone round if I'm going to dig it up ( broken shoulder so I really can't do it myself) , not sure it would fit in a pot - it's massive !

I do like it but it's taking over a bit.

I've just delved into it ( bloody spikes !) and can see that it could be split .

Nan 's right. It's a phormium. Hard to split with enough roots to go again.

CremeFresh · 21/06/2017 09:01

I probably wouldn't bother to replant the other bit , I haven't really got a space for another one of these. I just need to thin it out.

I had one which grew very large. It was partially killed off one very bad winter and I started to dig it out. It took me several weekends of work to try to do it myself. Before then, to try to keep the size down, I just used to cut the leaves off.

Watch the palms of your hands if you grab a leaf and try to pull it out too hard - they are quite sharp!
