A peony or not a peony, that is the question...

I bought this in a pot, it was marked peony. Planted late last summer so this is its first spring/early summer.
It's about 5 ft tall, very bushy, but I'm not sure if it's a peony. No sign of flowers.
What do we reckon?

I can categorically say it's NOT a peony! But afraid I can't give you an ID, sorry.

those leaves are a bit like poppies, but less furry

Definitely a tree peony, usually lovely yellow flowers. Wish I had one!

Tree peony, my mum has loads of the them but I think they need a few years after planting before flowering.

BlackPeppercorn · 14/06/2017 22:05

Thank you all, I shall persevere with providing TLC
I wonder - should I cut it back in the autumn, I'll google.
It's certainly filling a few gaps in my border

That looks exactly like my tree peony. I only bought it this year and it hasn't flowered yet.

JT05 · 15/06/2017 16:35

Eight years on, my tree peony flowered for the first time while I was away!☹️

Footle · 16/06/2017 19:44

Mine has just flowered for the first time after five years. There were about five flowers and they lasted about three days.

Ohyesiam · 16/06/2017 22:21

Tree peony. Mine took a couple of of years to flower, I was expecting yellow blooms, but they were white, and very welcome.

Qwebec · 18/06/2017 04:18

JT05 gosh that is a disappontement! I'm sure it will be even nicer next year, more blooms and all .

whitehandledkitchenknife · 19/06/2017 09:23

Definitely a Tree Peony. I only know because a far more knowledgeable friend identified it for me. It was heading for the great compost bin in the sky, sitting there doing very little and occasionally sprouting the odd bloom. It's been given a reprieve for now Grin

Peonies don't like being moved so it will prob take a year of two to settle.
