How do I look after this rose plant?

We have a rose plant in our garden which was here when we moved in a few years ago. Being a complete novice gardener I have no idea what variety it is or what to do with it, but it always looks really leggy and sprawling, and quite frankly a bit of a mess.
I'd really like to sort it out!
It could do with some support, but what do I use? My Mum also cut it down to a foot tall last August which I'm sure wasn't the right thing to do!
Expert gardeners please enlighten me?

It looks like a climber. Wait until the flowers are out and then post a picture for identification.
Meanwhile get some trellis on the wall and tie in the stems, for support, trying to train in a fan shape. Also feed the Rose with granular rose food, watered in at the base.
It looks healthy, leave pruning until the Autumn, when it is a light one and then give a harder prune in the spring.
Roses are quite tough.

For now,

Get down on your haunches and look at it closely.
The rose needs some air circulating around it to flourish.
Look for any branch that is touching or crossing another and take some of them out. You will notice some of them will look a bit straggler than others and these are the ones to take out. If in doubt remove the ones closest to the wall or the ones right in the centre.

Next reduce the top growth by about one third. If you give the rose a bit of a shake, you will see that some of the branches are tangled. Remove some of these too.

Scrape out some Compost around the base and put some fresh Compost Down. . Feed with either liquid seeweed or tomoroite. Keep it well watered for a bit and give it a feed again next month. Also water before feeding, never feed a dry plant,

Roses are tough old birds and very forgiving. They are are a bit like kids really, need fresh air, feeding and drinking.

In November reduce the Rose further. Cut out from the middle so that you have 4 or 5 good branches. Think of a goblet shape if that makes sense.

Should have said the top growth that have no flower buds on.

JT and Astrantia thank you both for your amazingly clear and helpful advice on rose care .
It's always seemed too complicated to me and I've taken the head in the sand approach ,worried that if I googled I'd just be overwhelmed .

Just to add, when each of those branches have finished flowering take out the branch about 5 inches below where the flower breaks out from the stem. This might produce a second flush of flowers late summer. Not all roses do but it is still worth cutting out the finished stems so that the rose concentrates it energy into producing roots and branches rather than hips.

Thank You both for the detailed replies! I have scraped out some compost and added some more. Will have a go at untangling at the weekend.

A couple of the buds have started to bloom. Pic attached.

Is there any particular shaped trellis I should get? Rectangular or fan?

I think rectangular trellis is better. Alternatively just put some eyes In The brick work and train the rose along iwires. It looks a very healthy rose judging by the leaves.

Don't screw the trellis flat to the wall, put some small supports behind it. This will increase the air flow and make it easier to secure the Rose to the trellis.

It looks like it's flourishing superoz, you must be pleased. petal has given you the right advice re the trellis. Enjoy your rose, not sure of the exact name. There are so many.
