That looks a bit like comfrey to me, except more grey than I'd expect...

Borage?

Vebrithien · 25/05/2017 16:32

Could it possibly be borage? Slightly furry leaves, with deep veins? If so, the flowers are usually a stunning deep blue star, lots of them on one stalk. Flowers are edible, nice in a salad and the bees adore them.

Another vote for borage, do the leaves smell a bit like cucumber? If it is borage the flowers are lovely, an intense blue with a black centre, float two or three in a glass of prosecco or any fizz for summer delight.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I just googled comfrey - the pictures look similar but there's no way the seeds of this plant would be sold as a kitchen seed (together with basil, tyme, dill etc). It's a regulated plant.

Vebrithien and Flavia:
Borage - that seems more likely. Off to google borage and its uses....

Yeah, it's not a kitchen herb though there's a sterile variety that won't overgrow your garden.

... and yes to the cucumber smell. I went out an crushed a tiny leaf.
So borage it is.

Thank you all.

What do you mean by "regulated plant?"

I have one in the wild bit of my garden, by the compost heaps.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 25/05/2017 19:54

Regulated plant is probably not the correct English expression.

What I meant is, that because of its medicinal properties it is not sold in seed bags for kitchen use and its medicinal use seems to be regulated. The plant itself can grow wherever it finds a place Smile, but I would not be allowed to use it in herbal remedies if I wanted to sell them.
