Propagating a Bilberry

Hello,

The hills are covered with bilberry near us. I looooove bilberries!

Has anyone taken a successful cutting? I found a complicated description online and I didn't understand what layering is, so idiots guide appreciated!

'Layering' you put a container of soil or compost underneath a branch of the plant, and wait for it to root into it. Bilberries come from moorland type environments normally, so probably need an ericaceous type of compost. Would it be illegal to dig up a small one, if they are plentiful?

Thank you, I googled and realised I discovered how to layer accidentally with a rosemary!

I wondered that. I may or may not have pulled a sprig up then felt guilty I'm fully aware of not taking plants from the wild but when they're so very common?

If you can layer them then maybe a cutting would work?

They're really delicious. We picked millions while on holiday in North Yorkshire last year. It was addictive. Being an rocks is another area teaming with them.
