You can certainly put it outside for the summer. I'm not sure if it will be frost hardy - can't remember offhand. I know people do grow them outside in warmer parts, but these may be specially grown cultivars which are known to be more frost resistant.

I can have a look in some of my books for you. back later.

We've got loads in our garden - up to about 30ft tall but we are in Brazil. Not sure if yours would survive the cold.

there are loads of palms here (worcestershire). I think you just need to be a reasonably sheltered spot

There are different sorts, some of which are hardier than others. However, the ones recommended by Architectural Plants are definitely hardy, and I think as plants get older their frost hardiness improves anyway.

I would try it out. If it is annoying you anyway then you don't have a lot to lose by trying!

If you have a sunny spot that gets good drainage you should give it a try in the SE of England, as long as you are not in a 'frost pocket'. What that means is that you are in a valley which suffers much more from frost than surrounding areas - like Redhill for example.

oh i'll replant it out the front then, which gets full sun and plants really thrive out there. better than binning it, poor plant i've had it since it was tiny and it's shot up! thank you

I just wanted to add that you would be best to acclimatise it to the different temperature. For example, if you have a colder hallway or porch to put it in for a while before it goes 'cold turkey'. Sometimes plants coming from inside to outside get kind of 'shocked' if it all happens at once, particularly if it is a cold snap.

Plus I heard on the radio that we are forecast snow next week, so I would wait until the next warm period we have rather than putting it out now. Ideally I would wait till the end of April to ensure that there are no frosts. Once it has had the whole summer in place, it will be better established and will get gradually used to lower night-time temperatures.

ok i'll wait until the beginning of may and put it in the front porch for a while

Have you thought about hacking a bit off to make it smaller?

I gained a yucca when DH first moved in. Try as I might I just can't get the thing to die. When we moved house one March I left it out for a week in the snow. It sulked a bit but came back to life. I've chopped all its shoots off (...its too big for the lounge dear..) and it still grew back I even let ds and his mates practice 'drilling' it with their elc drill and its showing no ill effects.
