Are these roses diseased? (pics)

I ordered some beautiful climbing roses which were delivered today. However they have black patches on the stems and I don't know enough about roses to know if they are diseased or not. Can anyone tell?

Did they come without root? I would email a photo and ask them. I have just had a rose replaced by David Austin which had failed to,flourish and the one they sent had long roots on it.

Hysterectomyhysteria · 04/05/2017 15:45

Yes they have their bare roots in the bag.
Will email David Austin and see what they say. Thanks.

I am such an idiot I am looking at it upside down. I would still email them or maybe phone as you will get a quicker answer.

Hmmm, they have said to cut off any of the effected shoots and it shouldn't affect the growth of the plants.
I am not sure about doing that as it would mean loosing between 25 and 50% of the stems on each plant.
Not being mercenary but I paid full price for these plants and don't expect to be chopping bits of them off.

I don't think I would be happy either. Right at the end of the bare root season, so you think they would have checked them first. What are you going to do.

I bought a climber from David Austin through a wyevale garden centre a couple of years ago. It was potted and called rambling rector. It failed to grow at all for 6 months so I rang them, they said keep watering and feeding it and give it another 6 months. Lo and behold by the end of that year it had completely filled the trellis but not flowered.
This year it is covered in buds and will be beautiful in about a month.
Sorry for rambling, what I'm trying to say is follow their advice.

It didn't grow for 6 months?!
Thinking about it I think that I am going to send the roses back and ask for non diseased ones. I understand that some roses will get diseases but I don't want to plant already diseased roses in my garden.
I am actually a bit shocked that they sent these roses out.

That surprises me, David Austin are usually excellent. I'd email stating that too many stems are affected to remove and ask for replacements.

pansydePotter · 05/05/2017 10:16

Definitely worth another phone call to say you are not going to accept them. I expect they will send you replacements and I doubt they will ask you to return them.

pansydePotter · 05/05/2017 10:20

I just sent an email photo of mine and, even though I had persevered with it for 3 years they agreed to replace it. It looked fine when it arrived but failed to grow. That is the only Rose I have had from them that has failed. I do think though, that they should have not sent those ones out.

I was going to order a new rose from them when I noticed the guarantee and just emailed on the off-chance.

WellTidy · 05/05/2017 11:43

I bought two David Austin roses last week and I've just gone out to check them to see how they compare to the stems in yours. Mine arent at all like yours, so I think you should argue stronger for a replacement.

Hysterectomyhysteria · 07/05/2017 19:01

Sorry for the delay in replying! I telephoned back and they are sending replacements out to me, hopefully they are OK. I will let you know. 😀

That's good

Looks like Canker.

Hysterectomyhysteria · 08/05/2017 17:46

The new plants arrived this morning and look perfect. They are already planted and I am looking forward to having a wonderfully scented patio this summer. Or next summer as I have no idea how long climbing roses take to grow and flower!? ☺️

Glad this got sorted. Are you going to plant the others as well . And, being nosey, do you mind me asking, what did you buy?

Hysterectomyhysteria · 08/05/2017 18:38

I bought Crown Princess Margareta, Graham Thomas and The Pilgrim. Graham Thomas is hopefully going to grow up my new pergola and the other two on the back wall of the house by the patio. I hope that they smell as lovely as I hope!
I have cut out all the effected parts of the first lot of roses and popped them in large pots and placed them at the furthest reaches of my garden - well away from anything else just incase. If they survive the brutal pruning then I will plant them in the front garden towards the end of the year.

Lovely, I am buying Crown Princess Margaretta this Autumn. Have been trying to decide between that and Boscobel. I have a Graham Thomas it is very prolific. My Rose that they replaced was the rambler, Albertine. It has only been in one week but shooting already.
