like this: wall planter

Last year I think I put five little petunia plants in each one. I wanted this: glorious basket

but got this: leggy, wilty, brown, pathetic basket

What did I do wrong?

I also bought a length of white plastic pipe roughly an inch in diameter from a plumbing suppliers. Cut it into lengths long enough to reach the bottom of the basket and then drilled holes in it roughly two inches apart all around. I then pushed the pipe into the compost and water the basket through the pipe. It helps to get water right to the bottom of the basket.

I line my baskets with (supermarket own-label) nappies, which hold the water really well.

OP I find it helpful to put the warer retaining granules into a bowl and mix with water into a gel like consistency before I add them to the soil .

Thinkingblonde I like that idea about the pipe - I have a couple of long tom pots that I find hard to keep watered and I think that might solve the problem .

You can re-use the pipes too.

I like the idea of using cheap nappies as water retaining medium. They hold loads of water, as proved by the overnight nappy that is taken off my gd every morning!

Right, I planted them today so I'll let you know how I get on. It was harder than I thought!

The liner thing kept falling out or leaving gaps for soil to fall out. And I was being -hindered- helped by DD who wanted to bury them.

I hope they don't mind a bit of handling as it was quite a rough ride at times!

So, I put little takeaway tubs in the bottom and some feed and water granules. And the plan is to nurture them better than my actual babies.

Thanks again!

So now we are all going on to 'plant watch' Mode. We want regular updates, possibly a camera link so that we can see them growing and unfolding.

Updates and pics. 😄
I am dying to get mine planted up but am having to wait until we come back from our holiday. Going to Costa del Sol on Monday for ten days.
Don't want to leave them unattended for so long. It's still quite chilly at night here. (NE) so still a risk of frost.

Setting up #plantwatch webcam now Wink

😄
