The purple flower is a lilac I think. Someone will be along who knows more though!

That's brilliant! A purple lilac

#1 is a viburnum although the exact nsme escapes me now. Highly scented, right?
#2 is lilac
#4 looks like climbing hydrangea but it's too close up to be certain.

MrsLettuce · 12/04/2017 15:38

Actually, if the clusters of buds on #4 are an inch or two across, rather than bigger (as I assumed) it could well also be a viburnum. Summer snowflake I think it's called.
#1 - was thinking of viburnum burkwoodii But there are several that look very simillar

littlewoollypervert · 12/04/2017 15:41

The last one looks like a magnolia (the flowers come out before the leaves) but it's quite an unusual colour - are the flowers lighter in colour than the buds?

sticklebrix · 12/04/2017 15:44

Is the second to last one elderflower?

  1. Virburnum 2.Lilac 3. Looks like a thornless rambling rose.
4.Cotinus 5. I can't remember, which I'd awful as I have a huge one in my garden!

Brilliant thankyou. I've been cross referencing with google and yes viburnum birkwoodi, lilac, thornless rambling rose. The bottom left photo looks much like a viburnum summer snowflake but could be elderflower or climbing hydrangea. Not sure about the bottom right plant too. Continus or magnolia?

Bottom right looks very like a dark red leaved continus (smoke bush) growing in my front garden. Really striking!

user1471558436 · 12/04/2017 23:07

Yes you're right, it does look like a smoke bush. Smile

Almost certain number 4 isn't an elder or climbing hydrangea, comparing to ones in my garden - viburnum sounds right.

MrsLettuce · 13/04/2017 10:50

I agree, #4 is certainly not elder. The leaves are too textured for climbing hydrangea and the whole scale of the thing is too small, I was looking wrong when I suggested that!

Trethew · 13/04/2017 16:07

4 is a viburnum plicatum, will be easier to get the variety when the flowers are out.

2 has flowers which look absolutely right for lilac, but the leaves are unlike any lilac i've seen, not just the variegation but the shape. Lilac leaves are more or less heart shaped. These look more like variegated privet
