Potential tree discovery

Does anyone know what this might be? I found it literally in the middle of a load of hypericum which I removed. Hopefully it's a keeper as it looks quite pretty. Thanks!

Looks like it's got thorny bits on the branches. In that case it could be a japonica shrub or a hawthorn tree. Any signs of blossom?

WhatToDo99 · 30/03/2017 13:44

No, no sign of blossom at the moment.

Not a hawthown, with those leaves

A better picture of the leaves would give us a chance, esp when they've opened a little more

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 31/03/2017 07:40

Leaves make me think of cherry, but the thorns say otherwise.

MewlingQuim · 31/03/2017 07:45

Thorns and rounded leaves like a cherry, could be crataegus prunifolia.

It is a type of ornamental hawthorn which gets white flowers in spring, big red berries and lovely red colour leaves in autumn.

It does look a bit like one but it is hard to tell until the leaves open a bit more.

It's really difficult to identify a tree just from its form. We need a picture of the young leaves!!

Trethew · 31/03/2017 20:30

I think Mewling might be right, but doesn't a cockspur thorn have really long thorns, like an inch long?? Can't tell from the pic

WhatToDo99 · 02/04/2017 15:08

Here's a hopefully better photo if the leaves
