I'm trying to ID a tree that's growing up through my hedge at an odd angle.

I was tempted to get rid of it but it's evergreen and provides a handy diagonal screen across the houses to the rear once the leaves have fallen from its deciduous friends.

It also has pretty white/ cream flowers (small, numerous!) in early spring.

Photos to follow Smile

are the leaves aromatic?

Kr1stina · 05/10/2016 18:19

Is it like when these people abseiled down a crevasse in Australia and found a tree that everyone thought was extinct ?

Gatekeeper · 05/10/2016 18:23

Coleonema album ??? grows to about 4-5 feet ? Do the flowers look like this?

I think you're going to have to post again in spring with a photo of the flowers!

shovetheholly · 05/10/2016 18:34

Oooh gatekeeper that does look a lot like it...

HaveYouSeenHerLately · 05/10/2016 19:15

Hi Gatekeeper, that looks like the closest yet but the leaves aren't quite right. No particular smell when I rub the leaves.

There are loads of mini brown branches from which the green needles grow.

Kr1stina I love the idea of a long-extinct tree growing in my suburban garden Grin

Errol I'll try again when it starts flowering!

I'm not making it up . It was found in 1994. People who go to visit the site have tea towels tied round their heads . Honest

I can't help but I'm fascinated to know. Are you sure it's not a rosemary bush that's got out of control and taken over the tree? Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 05/10/2016 22:08

Giant scentless rosemary 'album'?Grin

HaveYouSeenHerLately · 05/10/2016 23:05

Pahaha! Love the giant rosemary suggestion. I've raised a colossal kitchen basil this year but I promise my rosemary bush is nice and neat GrinWink

Off to investigate Kr1stina's link..!

I need to know now :) - my first thought was some sort of yew as well.

shovetheholly · 06/10/2016 10:13

It looks like a giant tree asparagus.

(I'm just making this up now).

Does it look like any of these?

How about Ozothamnus rosmarifolius? That has bluey-green leaves though. Or there's O. ledifolius with green leaves. Neither are supposed to grow as tall as yours but maybe it's scrambling up to reach the light?

shovetheholly · 06/10/2016 14:45

Can you remember what the white flowers look like haveyouseenher? Are there sprays of them, like a haze of white?

I'm wondering if it could be some kind of tamarisk?

HaveYouSeenHerLately · 06/10/2016 14:49

Hi all, I'm going to catch up tonight (!)

From memory the flowers are tiny creamy white balls??

Thank you for all the help and interest Grin

OP posts:
Kr1stina · 06/10/2016 17:37

Are the tiny creamy balls on the ends of the branches ?

Is it this ?

Kr1stina · 06/10/2016 17:42

Are you sure that some of the little balls aren't still there on the end of the branches? They might have changed colour so they are less noticeable .

NanTheWiser · 06/10/2016 18:11

Could it possibly be Melaleuca linariifolia? www.flowerpictures.net/flower_database/h_flowers/honey_myrtle.html AKA Snow-in-summer.

shovetheholly · 06/10/2016 18:12

Is that Cryptomeria Kristina?

If you could give us a picture from further back, so we can see the form of the tree more, maybe that would help?? (Appreciate this might not be possible!)

There's a plant called melaleuca that has rosemary-like foliage and white bottle-brush type flowers... I am way out of my comfort zone here, this is proper exotics to me!

Oooh, x-post with Nan!

Kr1stina · 06/10/2016 20:08

Oops forgot to post name, it is indeed cryptomeria var. Elegans Aurea

I know it's a wild guess because op doesn't think it's a conifer
