Moving established plants

Is this possible, and if so, how hard is it to do? I'm a complete novice.

We have flower beds across the back of house. Mostly rose bushes, tulips, and low level flowery things. The builders are coming in a couple of weeks to start an extension. Is it worth the effort of trying to move them?

The tulips have probably died down by now, and most people advise to lift them, keep dry over winter, and re-plant next year.

If the roses are decent plants, then surely it's worth keeping them. If you have a spare area of garden where they can be put in, ideally sheltered and protected from winter storms, then get them in soon after lifting. Maybe prune back excess growth, to prevent 'rocking', and mulch them if you have suitable compost or leaf mould.

I have the same issue and I am in the process moving stuff down. It's actually quite good discipline - makes you pack things in and fill borders elsewhere. Looks really weird to have a few metres of garden with nothing in, but it means I can keep my beloved plants!
