End of summer - what to do with strawberry and tomatoe plants?

Got some tomatoe and strawberry plants (first year I have had them)...novice question I know but when the cold weather comes The tomatoe plants go in to the bin (green bin - I have no compost) but the strawberry plants will be ok through to next year (when hopefully they will give me some fruit). How do you keep the strawberry plants through the winter? Got a tiny green house thing from wilko that I may be able to squeeze them in....would that work? do you water them through the winter a couple of times a week or more?

By the way the tomatoe plants are finally yielding me some ripe tomatoes so will keep them for a month or more yet.

Actually watching with interest. We had a couple of strawberry plants in hanging baskets - we got about 3 strawberries this year! (we did get them quite late on though!) Would be nice if they gave us some fruit next year.

Strawberry plants just stay in the ground where they are (or are they in pots? In which case I don't know what you would do).

Strawberry plants are In pots (as are the tomatoes)

Keep them in the pots, they'll overwinter, don't overwater them in winter but they might need a bit if it's very dry. I'd just leave them out uncovered. I think you'll need to put them in bigger pots with fresh compost in the spring if you want them to really flourish. If you have room in the ground put them in there instead.

Tomatoes - compost them.

Can I hijack and ask about chillies? No chillies yet but lots of flowers...

Overwintering chilli advice

I have kept chillis over winter on a sunny window sill in the kitchen - they need very little water. Maybe give them a feed now if they haven't produced chillis yet?

Mine are in the greenhouse and are a mixture of ripening chillies and flowering.

I'm not sure there's going to be enough sun left or warmth left in my corner of the North West for the ones only just flowering to produce chillies.
