low plants to survive high winds

hello all
short version - I planted a few seeds and baby plants on my balcony after getting some good advice here.

one of the issues I mentioned was it's a very exposed balcony on a high floor, with nothing to protect it on a windy day.

this has turned out to be even more problematic than I thought.

I would like a bit of winter colour out there but I have to be very careful as I can only plant low plants that are quite sturdy.

I would ideally like a couple of red evergreens to accompany the plants have survived. Any thoughts?

I am also thinking of planting winter heathers - I am not sure if the flowers are sturdy enough?

there are some low bedding plants on sale in Homebase - will that be better or will the little petals of pansies etc be too delicate?

I can see I might just be better with multi coloured cacti (!) but i would like to see some flowers. Begonias managed okay btw.

thanks for your thoughts.

Got it! The red tipped hebe would look good and a great texture contrast.

I agree they would look lovely together . But is there nowhere near you that sells plants ? 9cm pot is tiny and £7.50 is extortionate ! You should pay about £5 -7 for one in a 2l pot .

Oops sorry I missed that . I agree that growing them from small is fun , it's just more that the price was exorbitant .

Are there no nurseries near you ?

For general information, here's the relative size of a 9cm pot, an IKEA mug and a 2 litre pot

Thanks Kr1stna, thing is balcony is small so small pots to get bigger is fine. The ones I did in May have grown so much!

Good nurseries, nowhere I can get to without taking a cab so that expense has to be factored in too. Also I have no idea what I'll find when I get there. The public transport ones are not up to much or very expensive.

I have found the festuca on better offers but so far can't find that particular hebe in smaller sizes. Also thought of wintergreen but the berries will attract pigeons I guess.

Have ordered some heuchera so will wait for those to arrive and see how things look.

Also starting to wonder about the co,ours of the hebe wild romance. In the J Parker video it looks fab but on other websites looks more green.
