Is it a hazelnut or cobnut? I've seen it in hedgerows, hedges, and freestanding in scrubby woodland.

Pic, please?

cobnut is a close relative to hazelnut, the nuts are slightly smaller and rounder.

LifeIsGoodish · 15/07/2016 16:01

Ha ha! MN had a hiccup and wouldn't let me upload the pics.

The cobnuts I've seen were always bigger and longer than hazelnuts, but I've never seen a cobnut tree, and the only hazelnut trees I've ever seen all grew in mad - but natural - spirals. (Knowingly seen, that is.)

Maybe this is neither?

The mad spiral ones are Corkscrew Hazel and Cobnuts are a type of Hazel, of which there are many varieties.

I believe the nuts from the corkscrew hazel are barren, it can only be grown from grafting.

I think it's a corylus or hazel
