A is crocosmia,, take a photo when it's in flower and we will try to get the rest of its name . It looks tall and strong to me so I guess it's Lucifer

Dunno what exact clematis, but it's a group 2 so prune back to a strong pair of buds on 1 March

E is violet

F is a climbing jasmine

G is cornus

I'm guessing your garden is damp clay

Kr1stina · 12/07/2016 20:01

Sorry, should have said I think it's Cornus Alba . It looks a bit straggly , did you cut it back this spring or is it growing in shade ?

NotAnEMERGENCY · 12/07/2016 21:08

Yup, damp clay - spot on!

The Cornus alba is in a north-facing part of the garden and has a few large beech trees right behind it so it has been in shade a lot. I got a tree surgeon to significantly reduce the crowns in Feb so maybe it's started growing more because more light gets to it now?

I'd never noticed anything growing there before - certainly not anything in winter with bright red stems!

Maybe it wasn't doing much because it was starved of light, food and water. They like moisture and it's very dry under beech.

You can cut the stems back in the spring because it's only the new stems that are coloured . Assuming it's one of the kind with coloured stems . I have red black and green stemmed ones.

If it's not exciting, just take it out, they are cheap, common and fast growing

mistlethrush · 12/07/2016 21:31

Doesn't look like a cornus to me - doesn't have the pointed tip to the leaves and the stem doesn't look right. I was wondering about some sort of everlasting pea?
