Advice on cut flower garden

I spend an absolute fortune on cut flowers each week, so have decided to save my money and instead have a cut flower garden. I have started clearing the bed which is 2.5 metres by 10 metres. I don't have a green house, (yet - working on persuading the husband) and ideally any excess will be sold, just out the front of the house. We often put apples and plums out from the orchard so picture this in a similar manner with an honesty box

With this in mind, how do you plan what to include? Does anyone have any plant recommendations to provide value for money. I think I need to avoid the likes of tulips and daffodils that can be bought so cheap but also dont want anything SO expensive or one off that if it gets pinched I'm upset.
I am thinking things like dianthus, dahlias and gypsohlia so far. Any advice/recommendations?

A rose hospital! Mine are the same

Peonies should be cut when the buds are fat (soft bud stage) for the longest vase life. They will unfurl their beauty in the vase. Cutting them won't affect next year's flowering. I wish I'd cut mine earlier, they are being battered along with the roses!

Mad I don't know that rose type, I thought they were something else. Need gardening for dummies or something.

I have been wondering if there's any kind of stepped arrangement I could use to get more on my balcony. Might have to do a blue peter effort and see if I can make something.

MadSprocker · 20/06/2016 19:43

I can't remember Blush I chose them for the colour. They are a bush rose,

TooMuchMNTime · 20/06/2016 19:44

My balcony rose is the same colour. Good taste Grin

MadSprocker those roses are really beautiful, what gorgeous colours.

I don't have a cutting garden but raid my flowerbeds on a regular basis: alchemilla, aquilegia, cosmos, scabious, geraniums, lavender, roses and peonies are my staples. My teenage daughters often ask me if they can cut a little posy for their rooms too.

I don't have sweet peas this year, but I often grow them in a big pot with a metal support near the front door. I tend to cut every flower for the house on a Sunday afternoon. They last pretty much a week in a jug in the kitchen and there's a new crop by the following Sunday.

A photo for all the peonie fans. ( I love them with the lupins)
I cut a lot from the garden, I plant lots more than I need.

The rain is spoiling my flowers too, my delphiniums are seven foot tall, I'm weeping looking at them being battered by rain.

Ignore the clashing vase, I smashed my glass one.

All these are gorgeous
I love delphiniums too, they don't often sell those as cut flowers.

MadSprocker · 21/06/2016 10:09

I am weeping because slugs destroyed my delphiniums before they even started.

Such beautiful posies on here.

ClarkL · 21/06/2016 10:23

TooMuch time, have you a photo of your balcony? for size/layout?
I saw a beautiful picture on pinterest of a rose and hydranger in a big wicker basket, then potentially you could have some wooden steps, or hanging baskets with other plants like foliage to add to the arrangement, like asparagus fern

Clark, it's quite small
Main thing is finding some steps. I was thinking to get creative about it, not sure who sells steps...

Ratty667 · 21/06/2016 15:24

Have a look on the ikea site for balcony idea, they do it well.

I bought some more peonies today Sarah Bernhardt (pink)and Karl rosenfield. (Red) Now I know that they can flower I decided to invest in a few more.😀

MadSprocker · 21/06/2016 15:32

I have cheated and bought some dahlias today, as mine are doing sweet fuck all.
