algae in my rill

There's is nothing in the the rill but pebbles no plants or fish, my pets have a habit of drinking out of it though... Amy suggestions on how I get rid of it? Thx

Does new water from a stream flow through, or is it a 'closed' system so the water is recirculated all the time?

A 'closed' system will be more prone to algae I guess, but you should be able to scrape or sieve it out from time to time.

Try looking on an outdoor Aquatics web site, as that might have more definitive information.

It's a closed rill, just static water. We were fine last year but this year it suddenly appeared, I've tried scooping it out with a kids fishing net but it doesn't work that well. With the barley straw do I need to leave it in all the time ? How does it work?

You can buy it from the aquatic section. It comes with a net mesh bag. You just weight the bag down with a stone and drop it into the water. You can secure it to the side if you like, to stop it floating around.

After a day or two the straw is saturated and disappears under the water, then you just leave it there for about six months when it needs to be replaced.

It subtly changes the acidity level of the water to discourage algae without affecting wildlife.

No pump it's just a roll with stones on the bottom no life in it, just 3 fountains

So it's just stagnant water with 3 fountains ? How do you keep it clean ?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm struggling to understand how it's not green slime if it's got no water circulation, no filter and no oxygenating plants . I know that the fountain does a bit of oxygenating but wouldn't think it's enough .

I think Ferguson is right and you need to consult a specialist company or at least check out some pond / water feature websites .
