Pet plant hates

Bearing in mind that we all have different tastes (one woman's meat is another woman's poison and all that) what plants turn you off?

For me, it has to be begonias.

I like orange quite a lot. It looks great with lime green, burgundy and white.

But I'm not a fan of bright yellow. I have mellowed slightly though on the yellow front and did plant a few pale yellow primroses a few years ago. Very pretty.

HumphreyCobblers · 29/04/2016 10:33

Busy Lizzies and begonias are number one on my dislike list. Closely followed by fancy daffodils and those speckled laurel thingys. I also really dislike shrub roses without any underplanting or the wrong underplanting.

Ifailed · 29/04/2016 11:28

Can I add another one; why do people bother with main-crop spuds? New potatoes I understand, like all veg and fruit, freshly harvested they taste miles better than anything from the shops. But big spuds that you dig up and keep in sacks for weeks - why bother? They take up a lot of space, don't look nice and taste just the same as the ones you get in Sainsbury's.

shovetheholly · 29/04/2016 11:37

Shock at ifailed. I do think it makes a huge difference what variety you grow. I did some Picasso last year and cooked loads of roasts with them, and everyone adored them and I am no great shakes as a cook, so this is unusual! But I did have some others that were distinctly meh.

ok, I'll concede rare varieties, just for you shovetheholly. But I despair at the sight of good garden space or allotments full of King Edwards etc. That's what fields are for.

shovetheholly · 29/04/2016 12:41

Grin You're making me want a big pile of chips now, Ifailed. I'm at that point on Friday where I just crave salt. Must..... resist......

I love red hot pokers and maincrop potatoes - taste so much better than bland supermarket ones. 😀

My pet hates are forget me nots, alchemilla mollis, begonias, petunias, marigolds (municipal roundabout flowers), dwarf conifers, yellow flowers in summer (yellow is a spring colour only IMHO).

Also green bog standard hellebores, which self seed prolifically in my garden. Love, love, love the purple, white, red flowered ones though.

RingUpRingRingDown · 29/04/2016 12:54

And lemon balm - bane of my life!

dylsmimi · 29/04/2016 12:57

Grape hyacinths are on my hate list - they are taking over the front garden and I didn't plant them or like them!
I also have 2 spiky bushes - not sure what they are which I am waiting (& waiting & waiting) for dh to chop down - everytime I look out the window they look back at me mockingly!

shovetheholly · 29/04/2016 13:26

STOP IT GATEKEEPER!!

Well, you could have a drop-dead gorgeous room for a garden in each colour of the rainbow buffy Grin

Maybe time for you to chainsaw up, dyls!!

As someone who has made that mistake of planting mint and mint-type plants in the ground, I fully understand the feelings of frustration, anger, teariness, and resignation. Grin Mine is now in a trug!

That was supposed to say 'a drop-dead gorgeous garden room in each colour of the rainbow'. I do not know what happened there. It's Friday and I need salt.

chiiiiiiiippppppssss

dylsmimi · 29/04/2016 14:14

Would love to chain saw them but we don't have one (though I have a friend who does) but currently pregnant so probably not the best time to be chainsaw wielding ! Grin also another reason why the grape hyacinths have got the better of me this year.
I'm a very definite but enthusiastic novice to gardening but am lucky to have a well established previously well looked after garden to 'play' with!

There is no such thing as wanting anything more than chips. Except chocolate. Grin

Aldi had a cheap chainsaw last time I was in. I was seriously tempted. But then I had this "Oh, but will it be POWERFUL enough for me?" moment. "Perhaps I should go and look at bigger ones in Screwfix" I thought.

The thing is, I really don't even have anything to saw up. But when I do have a non-hypothetical tree to saw down, I will be glad that I saved myself for the real thing.

I DID, however, buy an axe. Unfortunately, I have so far been completely unable to hit a test log with it. But I am now, officially, an axe-wielding maniac.

Oh wow, can you imagine what an awesome day that would be!! Grin We could do it while listening to feminist classics on full blast.

Sisters are doing it for themselves....

OP posts:
Ifailed · 29/04/2016 14:34

Beware the cheap Aldi chainsaw. If it's the same one I bought, the chain broke and the shop were most unhelpful, claiming I had misused it.

apropos of nothing, here is a nice picture for STH.

I will add to the thread - I am at my DD's doing her birthday tea - which includes twice cooked chips ( along with other favourites of heres things like garlic mushrooms!)

bookbook · 29/04/2016 16:00

I don't like her computer though, it makes me spell wrongly!
