whitish something on compost in rose plant

hi all
novice planter here
I have a rose plant that I bought about 2 weeks ago. It's grown two lovely new roses but the compost has developed this white tinge.

I googled and found lots of info about white mould on the plant itself but not on the compost. Any advice?

Probably just mould on the compost due to a bit much water and warm conditions ?

ah, it is freakishly hot in this flat. i didn't think I'd overwatered it though. Oops. Should I scrape that layer off, I suppose I should?

You have then inside? I'm sure it can be done, but I expect they'll be very fussy.

If it is inside, i suspect you are watering from the top with tap water so it is likely to be just limescale left on the top.

its unhappy because it doesn't like being inside .

Do you have a garden / balcony ?

Oh mum always had hers inside
I dint really have an outside

I do water it from the bottom but this a very heavy limescale area.

The roses are doing well so it's happy in that sense
I also bought it from Homebase, they keep them indoors but it's not as warm as my flat.

Compost can develop a white mould. It's not harmful to established plants, though I wouldn't use if for seeds/seedlings.

Make sure they're not too dry, but also not too wet!

My lovely looking plant does not look nice anymore which is a shame.
