What is everyone planning to grow this year?
I have the bluberry bushes, strawberries, apple and pear from last year and hopefully i will get some proper fruit this year. Will be growing peas/tomatos/lettuce for definate as they all did really well. Cape gooseberry plants did well but fruit needed a couple more weeks of sun and never quite made it ,possibly start earlier this time.

OH they are divine!!!! So sweet, but so smooth tasting. Not an overpowering flavour or 'zingy'. Drizzle with honey, or just as they are. Have with Parma ham and and goats cheese, fig tart. YUM!!!!

cece · 17/01/2007 21:47

YUm

Someone gave me a chirocoo (sp) last week and I have saved the stone.

Rich caramel like flavour.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2007 21:54

A what??? Can you google and find a pic?

cece · 17/01/2007 22:00

sorry it is a Chikoo

It is on Tesco grocery shopping but no image. Got to go now as got guests and they want to go to bed! Computer in guest bedroom...

Loshad, IIRC you are in the same town as BettyBuilder and I! (we could have a seed swap meetup sometime?)

My poor allotment shed got blown OVER last weekend and I am not confident it will withstand the horrors of today's gale force beauties....

A fig tree might grow up here if you have a very sheltered sunny spot and a conservatory/heated greenhouse for winter...?
I fancy an olive tree myself!

mrsvern · 18/01/2007 10:52

FIL has a fig tree up in Carlisle in a very sheltered spot that gets the sun most of the day. It does really well
Shame I don't like figs

cheritongirl · 18/01/2007 14:21

are aubergines easy enough to grow in pots? thanks!

bettythebuilder · 18/01/2007 14:31

A seed swap meet up is an excellent idea fmv!

I'm hoping our greenhouse comes through these gales unscathed...the shed is tucked away at the side of the house, so should be ok (fingers crossed emoticon).

Dh was bought a little olive tree for Christmas - it's sheltering in the (at the mo unheated) conservatory.

bettythebuilder · 18/01/2007 14:35

My gardening book says that young aubergine plants can be grown in pots, but I've not tried them myself.

exbury · 18/01/2007 16:55

FWIW we are in the midlands (Worcestershire/Herefordshire border) and have a fig tree (don't know variety, sorry - we inherited it). It managed to ripen the grand total of 1 fig last summer, but the general consensus is that was due to lack of water. It is outside and gets no special treatment.

Now I have said that it will go and die...

VeniVidiVickiQV · 18/01/2007 17:31

at you lot meeting up.

nikkie · 18/01/2007 19:21

I had a mini aubergine plant last year in a pot.Got about 10 from it all about the size of an apple.

bettythebuilder · 18/01/2007 20:18

That's really good, nikkie - those mini aubergines in Sainsburys are even dearer than the full sized ones!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 18/01/2007 21:46

Am going to attempt aubergine for the first time this year. I've got two huge aluminium troughs that I grew peas and salad crops in last year. Well, I say huge, About 80cm x 30 cm and about 40cm deep. I got them from homebase for £5 last spring .

Anyway, I am growing my tomatoes in one this year, I think I'll do aubergine and peppers in the other one.

Oh I am getting ridiculously excited about this....!

nikkie · 18/01/2007 22:14

VVV at least it means I'm not the only one

Just had to go out and retreive my pots from whirling round my yard and my poor kiwi plant its now held up with 6 canes and the hanging basket bracket!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 18/01/2007 23:19

phew!

cece · 19/01/2007 15:28

Have jsut been reading about crop roatation. LOL on my little veggie patch!

My MIL has talked me into listing my old greenhouse on eBay! Not sure if anyone wants it but eh it's worth a try as think I will say they have to dismantle it for a bargain price...

Beabea · 19/01/2007 19:38

Hello can I join in. I havent done much gardening the last couple of years. Too much effort with new baby. Now Im on no 2 and not planning any more, so Id like to get more veg going.

I have done tomatos, aubergine, corgette, leeks and cucumber. We have strawberrys, raspberrys, black currants, apples and rubharb already.

I want to try potatos and carrots in bags or pots. What is best and where and when do I start? I haven't got a garden with sun in the right place hence the pots etc

filthymindedvixen · 20/01/2007 13:50

feel rather glum as have a day with nothing special to do, but the ground is too sodden at my allotment to dig

nikkie · 20/01/2007 17:29

Anyone know about moving rhubarb? In my Dads allotment his rhaubarb is under the fruit trees and we want to move it to the other end in the sun.

filthymindedvixen · 20/01/2007 18:05

well, my mum just dug up one of hers and gave it to me, last year. It was fine. Seems pretty resiliant and robust!

lots of rhubarb info here

nikkie · 20/01/2007 19:48

Thanks FMF

I'm going to attempt to force one of my three rhubarbs this year. I grew them from seed the year before, and, last year, planted them out in my garden after thinking they hadnt survived the previous winter. Was hard to see them produce lovely red shoots and not eat them. (I wanted to give them a year to establish).

We've had a lovely day down here. But I havent been out in the garden. We did visit the local DIY store to see if we could make a cheaper version of a cloche or a polytunnel type thing, but, on balance, once materials bought, it actually worked out more expensive .

justbeme · 20/01/2007 23:16

Hi Ventured to Wilkinsons today - they had no seed potatoes - but their seeds are buy one get one free - so stocked up . Also bought onions and rhubarb. so feeling pretty pleased with myself. It was a lovely sunny day , so we dug over my little veg patch and emptied a compost bin all over it!
I know this is only the start!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 21/01/2007 00:26

A good start though jbm
