Thanks to teacuphalfempty for supplying the title .
so, its the 1st of March, the meteorological spring is here, and it's all systems go for the coming growing season. Let's hope for a good one -no pests and diseases, enough rain overnight and plenty of sunshine. Well, we can dream....Grin

Hi, just popping in for a little advice on my strawberries if anyone has any... The kids and I spent an eternity quite some time taking seeds from some strawberries we had back in March/April. We planted them and they're slowly growing, know we'll not get fruit this year but planted them out and was a little worried about winter, am I best planting into the ground and popping a layer of felt around? Our ones from last year were planted in the ground and are thriving (but garden centre bought on year 2).

Book your strawberries look great!

Afternoon!
Lulooo - one of the plots on our site is like that - gets warned, gets someone to come in and rotavate. Except this year, no one would, because, as you say, its like concrete. He has had warnings for 3 years. The committee have decided enough is enough, as its in the rules that the plot has to be cultivated - so he will be kicked off. Its not fair when there is a waiting list of people who would love the chance to grow their own.
You still have loads of time to plant - I was at a charity plant sale this morning, and they had a big table full of germinated vegetable seedlings- french beans/runners/cucumbers/ squashes etc. So well worth looking out at car boots and markets as well.
storybrooke - lovely to hear from you again. Strawberries will be absolutely fine just planted out - I am in Yorkshire, and I don't protect them at all - they are tough little things :)
Come on folks - any titles for new thread, or are you going to leave me with the onerous task of choosing ??? Grin

Evening All!

Well, that allotment that was opposite me, the totally overgrown one, where I have never seen it worked on 15 months. The one I've been coveting ? They came back. Or the husband, of the wife who works it, came over. She has hurt her back but wants to continue so he was chopping weeds to hopefully stem the tide a bit. Well, I wish her better of course but I wanted that plot! Ah well.

Today I've picked a few broad beans. My first ones that I've grown! Like the borlotti however, there is an awful lot of waste. I do love the taste, but liked out that there was something growing over winter. I also erected the 1st of my 2 arches - yay! And planted out some tromboncino squash, hopefully to climb up and over. I have planted out too many though: I have Gardener's Regret already. I may whip 2 out, and stick a few beans in there as well. Erections to follow are another arch for Little Gem squash, and a couple more bean tee pees.

I also did a shag-load of weeding, and I concur that Weed'em and reap is GENIUS. Grin

Evening!
WhoKnows- thats ace :) I'll get it ready to go !
Cupcakes - I don't have exciting things going on either, I just ramble on regardless.
Spotted - yes there is a lot of waste on broad beans, but they are often the first fresh veg for a while after a lot of brassicas..... And you have some , so you win a ....Star for first broad bean I think Grin

Posted on old thread accidentally! Lurk often, post infrequently. What would you do in this situation? Get on well with everyone at site apart from my next-door neighbour (well, I never see him!). When I took the plot on a few years ago, he had a massive compost bin on the path (we're supposed to keep paths clear!) which didn't bother me because it wasn't in my way. Then he put more compost buckets, grow bags, pots etc. on my side of the path (leaving his side clear). Again, I left it because I just don't want the hassle (allotment is my joy in life). Also, not really in the way. Next year I'm going to be working that bit of plot more (need the space) and his stuff is massively going to be in the way. Should I ask the site rep to ask him to move it? Am scared he'll retaliate in an underhand way (I have a small polytunnel and worry he could slash it). I never see him - he's up there at 6.30/7 in the morning. What do you think?
