Strawberries in pots

I tried this last year and was reasonably successful til mice ate the green strawbs, took me a while to realise what was going on.

On somewhere eg gardening programme, they said to get your strawbs planted now for next year. Should I do this in pots if that is how I plan to grow them next year (if they are in pots I can stick them in the greenhouse for an early start) or do I wait until the spring then transplant them into pots. If I put them in pots now do I need to ensure the soil is rich enough to provide next years crop, or do I repot them in the spring??

Any ideas?

You can do it either time of year - October or March/April.

In a pot, I think I'd be tempted to wait til next spring. You then save them struggling through the winter in a container, which is more vulnerable to frost than the earth. You can still bring them on in your greenhouse for an early crop.

Like most fruit and veg in containers, they'll thank you for feeding every couple of weeks from late spring onwards... nutrients are soon exhausted otherwise.

Thanks shovetheholly , I buried the pots up to their rims in the garden last year so they wouldn't get frosted - but probably just giving myself unnecessary extra work! Will make a point of feeding regularly next year.
